i also love bark cloth. it is very nostalgic and retro to me, since i grew up in a coastal region. the only problem with barkcolth is that it is pricey and i love it so much that when i do buy some then i dont want to cut it , i just want to stare at it.
also, i love these bits of info you tell us sunshine, i never knew this about the real barkcloth.
the only time i pound my fabric is when i work on a project and it doesnt turn out like i want it to.
sorry, that was too easy.

love
fran

Well, what I described is not exactly 'fake' barkcloth! Barkcloth is the actual term used for the fabric.

Interesting to see the cloth made of actual bark -- I have a piece of it (found at a garage sale, natch).

Well I guess I will go with the reproduction bark cloth, not into pounding. I thought maybe it was like kettle cloth. I like kettle cloth, I don't have any right now, they do still make it right?. Is it still called kettle cloth?

That is fake barkcloth ( or also called reproduction) real barkcloth is made in places like hawaii and American polinesia and tonga and it truley is bark that has been pounded flat to make a fabric ( tapa) then it is painted they use it for clothes and other useful items bedding and such.

See what actually started it here follow link

Oh, Nancy Jo! You would just love bark cloth! Here's my description: fabric from 1940s (and into the fifties and sixties) -- it was often made into drapery panels. It's a heavy cotton with a heavy texture to it -- that's the 'bark'. The prints are often organic shapes, or flowers, or in the 50s you'd see the modern 'Jetson' look. In a recent magazine, I saw a fleamarket find of poinsettia prints. And I often see bark cloth panels for sale on Ebay, where they fetch a pretty penny.

I have a couple of pieces of barkcloth -- intended for pillows and to redo my sewing 'sling' basket.

Get out there and search for bark cloth, Nancy Jo!
