Great news.... my daughter is engaged and the wedding is in June 2013. YIKES! Just a little over 6 months.

I've been a seamstress since childhood and even made my own wedding dress 23 years ago. At first, my daughter didn't want a "homemade" wedding dress. She felt like I've made her clothes for years and wanted to buy something ready-made. I accepted her decision and didn't say another word.

A few days passed and she asked if I'd make it. She couldn't find anything she liked. She drew a sketch and in one evening I had a 'mock' muslin version of her drawing hanging on the dress mannequin.
She took one look and cried. She said that she couldn't believe how I created in reality what was a picture in her mind. WOW!! That was a huge Blessing to hear that.

It's now almost June and we're just a few weeks away from the wedding. It has been such a joy to work on this dress for my daughter. I am so anxious to share pictures but I'm sworn to secrecy.

I've done some french seams and some serged seams. I guess it's a mix of 'old' and 'new'. The lace is what's taken up time....I'm having to hand sew most of it. I can't wait for y'all to see it.

I'm making the bridesmaid dresses, too. I'm having to create a pattern for that, too, like I did for the wedding dress. All our girls are modest and the dresses at the bridal stores are too low cut and too short....and cost too much! One dress was going to cost $140. Well, for $150 I'm making 3 dresses.

We're pinching pennies so well and it feels good. Although, it's a bit silly that the cake is costing more than all the dresses. lol

That's a good deal on fabric, I believe 15 years ago when I married my fabric was around 200! I didn't know about coupons and such as that back then! ARG! I know 110 sounds like a lot for one dress in fabric, but when you are talking about wedding quality fabric it's a pretty good deal. My girlfriend who made my dress said the fabric was a dream to sew too, it was really nice she said to sew such nice quality fabric, and was easy to sew. So hopefully your DD's fabric will be too!

And really 110 is literally what the flower girl dress for my DD cost for my brothers wedding at the bridal store. It was was awful quality, it wasn't lined, no french seams (in fact they weren't even serged they were raw!) I couldn't believe it when I looked inside how awful it looked, and it was just a basic dress, that you had to buy extras to make it nice-like sashes, flowers etc! It was only a "slip" style dress, with no extras. I was in total shock at the 110 price tag, and that was on the clearance rack! So if that was a size 3 toddler flower girl dress, you can imagine what a grown up wedding dress would cost! So you are going to be literally saving thousands, and will have such a much nicer dress in the end to boot!

UPDATE....

All our plans are falling into place nicely. We have been Blessed by so many people that are gifting items and services to my daughter.

The fabric stores in our area have all shut down. We considered going into Houston to some of the specialty fabric stores but after looking online we decided the prices were just too high (lace $300/yd). We traveled an hour away to a basic fabric store and found the fabric that my daughter had pictured in her mind. Excited is an understatement of how we felt. All the ladies were ooohing and aaahing over my daughter's sketch of her dress and we all had a great time chatting.

When I got to the register, the satin was on sale from $20/yd down to $9/yd. Woo Hoo!!!! But then, the manager did something sooooo incredibly nice.....she marked the lace down 50%!!!! I couldn't help but cry for joy. My daughter, too. Then the other ladies started crying because we were so happy.

I still need to buy the boning and other necessities. BUT, the fabric cost me only $110. Can you believe that?!?!

Catherine,

I just came home home from our local Wal-Mart store. They have on sale some left over Christmas Decorations that were Peacock theme.
You might check your Wal-Mart if you have one.. You might be able to use some of those decorations in the wedding decorations.

I love the theme. I know her wedding is going to be beautiful.

Hugs!

Catherine, besides making my own wedding gown many, many years ago. I too am a seamstress and have been sewing for over 50 plus years. I have made both of my daughters wedding dresses, three flower girl dresses that were used in my younger daughters wedding. I even have maded my friends wedding gown, because she had seen what I have done with my dsughter's gowns. Yes I did French seam because they are treasurs that will last a lifetime. Mine still looks great after many, many years. Congrats. Your daughter will treasure her gown. Keep us posted.

Cathrine,

Like Heather, I, too, like that you let her make her decision. She was able to go out and see what there was to offer and realized mom knows best. I think it's funny that it only took her a few days to realize this too!

I hope you'll post some pictures when it is finished!

oh and a btw, I'm glad you didn't say anything to your DD when she said she would buy off the rack. I'm glad she went out and seen what was there. Personally I've always also had a lot of hand made clothing. I had never been to a wedding dress shop before my DSIL (to my brother) wedding. I had always assumed that the dresses that cost thousands of dollars were some spectacular quality, and the utmost etc etc. I was in pure shock at the poor workmanship of what was there versus the prices. I would of assumed the ones that advertise for only 99 dollars, would of been the cheaper poor quality dresses, but not the ones that are in the thousands.

Oh I wouldn't slight you if you serged it. But, I thought it was absolutely crazy that something that cost thousands of dollars was serged and not french seamed.

At the same time if there was ever a occasion to take the extra time for french seams I would say this would be it. In my opinion it's one of the top three most important days of any person's life. Other things come and go with importance, but the top three always are up there-the day you devote your life to God, the day you marry and the day/s you have your child/ren. All the other days pale in comparison in my opinion of importance. ;o)

Thanks, ladies.

@Heather.....I so agree with you about quality and cost of what's available today. I'm so glad you mentioned 'french seams' because I have been trying to decide if I should put the time and effort into the seams or to just use a serger. I'm thinking now it will definitely be french seams.....this is a future heirloom to my daughter, right? It's definitely worth the time and effort.

awesome. my family has traditionally had home made wedding dresses. Every one I know in my family has had some one in the family make theirs for them.

Well, my SIL went to a store for her's. In my opinion, it was shoddy as they come. But, for sure not a "shoddy" price tag! I thought it was horrible quality. I don't dare ever tell her though...but I did tell my sister...and she said she agreed, she would have the same aunt who made mine, make hers when they time comes she said. Neither of us can believe the price of store bought versus the horrible quality! I mean....I thought for thousands of dollars you should have something "lined" and nice! not loose seams! (I would expect french seams etc! NOT raw edges!) I make better quality every day wear then what my DSIL dress was made! My dress was VERY nicely made by aunt....and I only had to pay the price of the materials...the labor was my wedding gift. Plus well I feel forever greatful so I always bring her back gifts from our honeymoon, to our anniversary outings! lol And it wasn't even close to 1 grand...let alone grandS! lol haha It was only about 200-250, I ordered pretty expensive fabric and at the time hadn't sewn in forever, so I didn't know about "coupons", probably could of been closer to 150...had I used coupons, especially for the damask. Plus it was completely 100 percent what I wanted, customized down to every button, lace scrap, etc etc. Totally what I wanted, and completely to fit me...off the rack just doesn't hold a candle to it!
