I wanted to start a hat for my husband, but it call for sz. 8 double points, or a size 8 46" circular needle in Magic loop fashion. I've watched videos on that "how to" and it just seems pretty confusting to me.
Anyone have opinions on this?

Magic loop is really for any circular knitting. Basically, you need a circular with a really long cable. I learned from these instructions:

but IGNORE the pictures, because they are more confusing than anything else. I had to read the wording and experiment to understand the concept. I find it to be slow, because you knit half the sticthes in a round, then have to stop, adjust the needles and cable, then continue knitting the other half of the stitches. This is fine for certain projects, or if you don't have the right size 16-inch needle in a pinch. But, for a hat, I'd always stick with the 16-inch needle for speed and ease of use.

Great hat, Teri--thanks all for the advice. That's what I think, too--I'll just start on my 8 inch 16 length circulars and switch to double points. That's what I'm most comfortable with, at any rate.
When I watched the 30 or so videos (!) about magic loop, it seemed to me that, as Sarah mentioned, it's more for knitting two tubes of something equally at the same time, as opposed to a hat.

Here is one I just got done doing for a friend, I dyed the yarn myself, and worked it up on size 8 circular needle, I don't use a very large one, I think it was only 8 or 9 inches and I had 80 stitches on it ... I find the longer the length in between the needles, you have more of a chance in twisting them ... total time 2 hours. But, I don't sit down and knit,for 2 hours ... a little at a time.

I like DPN more for socks and smaller items. Magic loop is easer for larger items so heavy DPNs are not in the way, but I find magic loop to be slow!
If I were knitting a hat, though, I would get a 16-inch circular, then switch to DPNs once the decreases made it impossible to continue on the 16-inch circular.

I just use a circular ... faster for me ... I just knit two hats in about 4 hours.
