I plan to make some little autumn needle cases with the scraps...I have been sidetracked with company here and doing some other projects..now I am full on into fall projects and those little needle cases are calling to me!!

Posted - Oct 05 2006 : 11:00:35 PM Up until the 1800's most homes in America had bare floors. "Rugs" were used to cover beds, tables or other furniture. The word "rug" originally meant coverlet. Think how cold it must have been on winter nights in a colonial home! The typical penny rug got it's name from the felt circles that are layered in graduated sizes, like coins. Older examples are usually appliqued from felted wool and finished with blanket or featherstitching. Sometimes you will see examples which are heavily embroidered, or finished with a scalloped edge called a pen-wiper border. There are so many beautiful new patterns out there for this kind of work! The array of hand dyed and overdyed wool is incredible too! Wool applique is one of my very favorite things to do! Sunshine is right, they make wonderful projects to tuck into your bag & work on while you are sitting or waiting. Hope to hear you are trying a wool project soon! Blessings, Rhonda

Posted - Oct 05 2006 : 2:38:40 PM A penny rug is actually a table runner. they are made out of felted wool. they are not a real rug. But a table piece. They traditionally have a blanket stitch around the edges. Start with the smallest pieces on top and work down.
