SACHET? Not sure I spelled that right, anyway, I have made several over the past, always fill them with lavender. What else could I use, and when you fill them, do you use all lavender or mix the lavender with stuffing? I liked the sweet annie I got from Frannie once but don't know where to get that.

Nancy: I fill my bags with lavender flowers I grow in the garden, but when I was in Austin TX at the Boggy Creek Farm market they sell it there. I have also used pine needles, Rosemary or other herbs. Most without anything else such as fiberfill. Pine needles can be saved from your Christmas tree and dried. I save them in jars and keep them in the cupboard.

I will look into growing some sweet annie next year, I love the smell of it, or at least I think I do. Frannie of cabin creek sent me a little bunch wrapped in some vintage material, and it says its sweet annie, that was several months ago, That was the first I had even heard of it. I have to get out more. Won't be planting anything today, the wind is blowing at about a ba-zillion miles per hour with pea sized hail, and rain, mixing with wet snow. I have the fireplace going, its about 34 out now. Richard will be home soon, and some of the kids are comming for dinner, so you are asking yourself what does this have to do with sachets? Well not much.

Nancy Jo, if you have a whole foods co-op type store anywhere near you, they often sell wonderful herbs and flowers for potpourri and sachet making. That would save you shipping and handling at least. And yes indeedy, Sweet Annie grows itself, all you need to do is sit back and wait to harvest. I like to take it while still green and flexible and make wreaths with it. Nance |

I was looking through some of my books for "autumn-ish" projects, and Phyllis Shaudys' "Herbal Treasures" book has some wonderful sachet ideas and recipes in it - a very worthwhile read if you want to check it out from the library...
I SO wish I could smell all of the wonderful things you are making... I'm glad I have a pretty vivid imagination!!! - and Lorij - I would just LOVE to walk through your garden sometime - it sounds just wonderful.

That is a lot of harvesting you got going on there. I think that is great that you grow and then dry and use the plants, what a lot of work. Well those of us that don't do that sure like the results you get, as I 'am sure you do too. Do you give the things you make from the harvest as gifts? How long have you been doing this?

You can get all the lovely things Judith mentioned from Frontier. They sell by the pound, good prices...and if you have a tax ID number you can buy wholesale. I should get a commission, huh? :)

Now that is a lot of little sachets you have made there. where do you get all your fillings from. I don't grow any, so that won't work. I order my lavender, I guess there must be a place to order some of the things you mentioned, I'll have to check into that. Thanks so much for all the ideas. This could get big.

Hi, Nancy! I make a blend of what I call "Milady's Sachet" which includes lavender, mint, rose petals, calendula & lemon verbena. I also do a "Mindfulness Sachet" with rosemary and lemon verbena. And then there are any other number of combinations - basically whatever you like. I have lavender & mint, lavender & rose, lavender & thyme (and others I can't recall at the moment) that's good for moth control. Use whatever you have and what you like. For the sachets, I don't put a filling, just the herbs, and no essential oils or fixatives. Just press the sachet to get more scent. I also make dream pillows, and in those I include flax seed, mugwort (for remembering dreams & to encourage prophetic dreams), rose petals (for loving thoughts in dreams), lavender (ease headache and allow psychic cleansing), mint (vividness & alert sensation in dreams), chamomile (relaxing & pleasant dreams), sweet hops (peacefulness in dreams), catnip (relaxing before sleep). Most of those "uses" I got from Jim Long's books about herbal dream pillows and also a book by Riotte called "Sleeping With a Sunflower." I also do a lavender eye pillow with just lavender and flax seed - the flax, of course, helps mold the pillow to your eyes and helps with relaxing or a headache. I just love growing and crafting with my herbs. While I'm ready to do a final fall harvest, I am so looking forward to expanding my herb garden in the spring. Have fun! (Oh, and about the stuffing, the only one I put stuffing in is a catnip cat toy - I think purely filling the toy with catnip would overdose the catkins...JMHO)

I'll bet the flax seeds are nice and "slippery" and heavy for the "heating bags." I've also used rice in some, too. I have a little lamb-shaped rice and lavender heating bag for my 3-year-old during the winter and he LOVES it. I just pop it in the microwave for a minute or two and, voila!, a toasty warm kidlet.

I have used flax seed as a filler with lavender or mint for sachets...or those little bags you heat up to warm a sore muscle.

This is just a thought. Could you mix lavender with maybe rice or buckwheat so that whatever you stuff doesn't use so much lavender?

Thanks for the imput, kind of afraid to add the stuffing with the lavender, thought I might ruin it. For smaller things I will do all lavender, but like you said a little stuffing might help with the bigger items.
Funny that the place I order from is so close to you. I have had good luck with them, the lavender I have ordered so far has been nice and strong, and they ship it out pretty fast to me.

Nancy -- I have done my lavender filling both ways. Depends on how much lavender I have on hand. If it's a larger sachet then I add stuffing. Lavender is about the only thing that I've used. But something with a spicier Fall scent would be great. I'm anxious to hear about ideas.
Where you order your lavender from is about 3 hours from me. There are so many lavender farms in that area. Every year I say I'm going to go to the lavender festival -- maybe next year!

Nancy, funny you should bring this up! I was just going to write to ask you what you put in the sachet you sent me. :) It smells wonderful! I put it in one of the bins I store wool in and would love to have one in each bin! Lavender keeps pests away from natural fibers. The scent was so strong and such a pure REAL lavender! Did you use lavender oil? And if so, may I ask what kind it is?
As far as Sweet Annie goes, you can buy it from many companies online. Anyone who sells herbs or drieds should have it. I recommend growing it next season yourself, as it is SUPER easy to grow! I'd share, but I didn't get plants until very late this year...not sure if mine is going to bead or not. :( A few Farmgirls were growing sweet annie. You might check around the forums too. Maybe a RAOK gal will be sending you some!
I used to buy bulk herbs from a company called Frontier Herb Co-op. They are online. You can include many things in a sachet! There are different plant materials that are used as fixatives-the thing that holds the scent. Fixatives are mixed with your oils in a "proper" potpourri or sachet blend. I'd leave out the stuffing except as a filler in a small pillow or such. If you'd like I have potpourri/sachet recipes I will be happy to share. Haven't made them in years, but still remember how! :)
