Could we start a thread for dyes?
I would like to dye with our goldenrod, but does it need a mordant?

A mordant is to set the dye. I have only used the vinegar method, and with pokeberries. When I used red onion skins I did not, and the doily is fading.
I am getting more books from the library too.
They say to use a non-reactive pan. I used an aluminum one, not realizing it was aluminum, and the pokeberries still dyed my wool yarn.

Many of the books you can get from the library include information about using dyes and mordants. This is only my second year to do this.

What is a mordant? We have been talking about using natural dyes for roving, but I don't know what a mordant is. Is it to set the dye?

I will be using wool yarn.
Last year I used pokeberry and red onion skins.
This year I have goldenrod and also black walnuts.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Yes, most ALL except for the Black Walnut NEED a mordant.
I dye with ONLY natural dyes, Your mordant can be, Alum,iron tin, Viniger, citric acid ... and so on all give different colors. I just dyed with Goldenrod,tickseed and poke weed berries and tomorrow I will dye with black walnuts ... which I will NOT use a mordant with.
Now, I do only dye wool. What are you wanting to dye?
The purpose of a mordant is make the fibers or tissue indispensible in adhering dyes.
