Katmom, you are so creative. you are an inspiration. i spent Sunday afternoon cutting up a bunch of wool sweaters that i picked up at Goodwill for $1.49 each at the end of winter. Cashmere, merino, lamb, etc. which will make some awesome penny rugs for C-mas gifts for the ladies i work with.

Some dreams are worth the risk it takes to make them real.

Love your designs. Where can the templates for the designs be gotten? Love to make gifts for Christmas.

I love these, but I thought penny rugs were table runners. I like how you've re-defined them.

Grace,

Thanks for the info. I will check out their websites. Your handwork is beautiful; I am afraid mine would not look very good. I guess that is why I fill in with roving!!

Portia, I hand stitch my pieces... I have not tried roving nor needle felting....yet... :>)
I usually look at other patterns and then just sort of re-create & put my spin on the design. The 'trailer' one is truly my own design.

There are to wonderful sites you might find interesting for Penny Rugs...as well as red work, quilts & wool projects.

Stacy of Buttermilk Basin
and Bonnie Sullivan from 'All Through the Night'

Both Bonnie & Stacy have recently tought classes at the Buggy Barn Quilt Shop and are talented ladies in their own right. I have several of Bonnie's wool kits I had bought awhile back...who would ever have guessed that a year later she would be at my home.

Google them to see their website, kits, patterns...etc.

Both Bonnie and Stacy stopped by my home this weekend to see mine & my girlfriends vintage trailers as well as my most recent 'penny rug' work.... it was an honor to have them look at & photograph my work.

Plus I have them hooked on wanting a vintage trailer..... in the mean time I need to finish up my current penny rug...Beehives on plaid wool. I am makeing 2 of them...

I love these. I had not heard of them before. You are so talented.

Love these! I also do penny rugs. Do you ever fill in the design with wool roving? I do that quite a bit---actually more-so than cutting out the pieces of wool. I think I will try that next. Do you hand stitch your pieces on or use the needle felting tool to attach them? You have some wonderful designs. Where do you find them? I have a few I have ordered online, but would like a free source on the internet if you have any.

Thanks,
Portia

hey Jess,,
I wash & dry (felt it) the wool, then I steam iron it... then cut out & sew on my shapes... after all is done and assembled(sept rhinstones or anything that can't take the heat from the iron)....I press on the back side, then the front & then the back again. the steam just gives it that little extra puffy, fluffy look.

Grace~ When you steam it on the back to get the puffy, do you do that to the wool or after the backing is put on? JW :)

Oh and in the above photos... the Trailer one,,, all the trailers are are from old mens wool suit jackets, as is the background wool for the beehive,,, the plaid was a jacket and the brown was a womans coat... everything felts up so wonderful after being washed and steam ironed.

3 of the ones below were gifts....

The Blue one is from Denise and the 2 hearts are from Andrea. The hearts have 'pockets' to tuck notes or ??? inside.
I love penny rugs...

Teri,,
between my neighbor & I,,, we buy wool clothing at the Thrifts....cut it up & wash it....we also buy wool felt at JoAnns fabric..... There is a little quilt shop about 13miles up the road from us...called "The Buggy Barn" (MaryJane did an article on the BuggyBarn in her magazine awhile back)... but we can buy wool pieces usually 12"...in wonderful colors at the Buggy Barn...but it's a bit pricey... so Andrea & I let all our friends know to save their old wool clothing...including blankets... for us.
The black & white wool fabric was formally a skirt... it's a bit thinner and looser weave,,,but still worked out well.

hey Jess, I had to chuckle at your comment ...'perpetual pennyrugs'... lol!

Thank you, Grace! I find that this is so relaxing to work on and I choose my time after the older children have gone to bed and it's just baby and I. He knows it is time to settle and think about bed whenever I pull it out to work on. :) (I may have to do perpetual penny rugs...heehee) The Scottys are just too cute!

Oh Jess,
I forgot to mention,,, penny rugs make great mug rugs, wall hangings and table runners....
So save those bits-n-pieces of wool scraps.

One of the (many)things I luv about 'penny rugs'... they can be large or small, easy peasy or more complicated....but best of all, can be made from wool scraps.... and are toteable..so I can take one with me to work on in the car while hubby is driving.

I steam iron (on the back side) the penny rugs to help 'puff' it up a bit.
I am working on another one tonite... a Beehive motif. I'll post pics when it is completed.

Emily, thank ou for your sweet comment... I am the rebelous type,,,(I run with scissors too!) and like to 'borrow' ideas and add my spin to them. :>)
