Anyone know where to purchase replacement belts for old treadle machines? I'd like to start sewing on my old machine, but it needs some love to get it in working condition! :)

I would look for your heads (sewing machine) manual, if you don't have it, look online for a online edition of the manual and see what size you need.
Otherwise go to sewing reviews website and post your question there's a lot of men and women there that are into treadles and converting, etc, and may know by your models head what size you need. But, most manuals for most heads had all the instructions for treadling and the belts etc.

Mara, so nifty! I might see if dh has some clothesline hanging around that I can use! I don't think there's a sewing shop around that would carry belts...maybe if I drove a ways. I'll check the Lehmans site, and look into that Facebook group...sounds fun! Beverley, if I can't find them anywhere else, I might take you up on your offer! Are the belt sizes pretty standard? My treadle isn't a Singer, so are they sold by length, i.e. inches?

Oh,there's a facebook group called Mad For Treadles,if you do Facebook then they might be able to help you locate what you need,very helpful and active group.

Used to be that the Lehmans catalog carried treadle belts and old Singer machine parts,I'm not sure if they still do,I have a couple Singer treadles and have had luck finding parts and such on eBay and am lucky to have found a local sewing and vacuum supply (conveniently right next to my favorite tack shop)that carries treadle belts.
I would look up Lehmans or Cumberlands General Store and see if they still might carry treadle accessories.

What about a farm supply store? I know my dad used to work as a heavy duty mechanic & they had belts of all sizes & shapes. Probably if you took it in, you'd be able to find something that would work. Just an idea.

You can make your own out of clothesline. Here's a YouTube video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dax5tDB53jA . There are also sources online for treadle repairs and parts sales. Just Google belt, treadle, replace and you'll find them.
I learned to sew on a treadle machine in 7th grade Home Ec class. I often wish I had one. Good luck getting yours working again! |
