I stumbled across a review of this book online, and now I'm waiting for my turn to borrow it from my local library.

I've got so many vintage books (and parts of books) in bad condition that I can't bring myself to throw away. I'm excited to learn how to make something beautiful out of them.
Anybody read this? Or do you have suggestions from your own crafting experience? |

Hi Amie :) There is folded pages under the trim. I do not use that area of the Rolodex, so I put decorative trim, to make them look nice ;)

Oh, I "get it" now about the book rolodexes. Is there a real rolodex under the trim? Or is it just the covers of the book? |

Once you take a book you know you will not read and/or can not think of anyone to give it to who would read it (LOTS and LOTS of books at thrift stores get thrown away weekly)then give it a try - whatever your project. At the library we tell all who will listen to respect the books but we discard alot, put them in friends of the library book sales and there are still books leftover - even the FREE cart is full most of the time. Every book gets easier - I can not imagine doing this to a book I adore but that being said we made tablets at library crafts and everybody had a good time doing them -adults to kids. I cut off the front and backs of books and ripped out the pages that had blanks on one side or half of the page so that they could be written. I did this to a copy of Black Beauty that had water damage - it was hard but oh so cool in the end and every female got at least a few sheets of the book for their tablet/journals :) Give it a try and you will be suprised at how much you love playing with books - next up at the library...Altered Art Journals - FUN! Love the book rolodexes!!! They remind me of the footstool from Beauty and the Beast :)

Paula, I so understand what you mean. But I've got lots that are falling apart anyway, so I think this is a way to give them a dignified second life--I wasn't up to just hacking randomly, but I think with expert guidance I'll be able to do it.
And, Karen, it's good to know that you're considering some of the projects in the book to be kid-level. Her projects looked a little intimidating online.
Madeline, I would love to hear more about your Rolodex. My husband has some of the old office Rolodexes sitting around--would I use those in some capacity?
Nancy Jo and Kristina, those are all great ideas. I'll have to try some of those.

I've used book pages to decoupage different things, used pages to make magnets with small round glass pieces, and used book bindings to make bookmarks with. Some of those projects are on my S.C.R.A.P. blog.

Amie,
I was thinking about doing something like that at one time. So I was looking at the thrift for Children's books to take apart. They have such pretty pictures in. But then I would get them home and keep them. So Now I cut up old greeting cards. I can see all kinds of ideas with books. Cover an old hat box or suitcase with the printed pages, cover smaller boxes, well I could get carried away here, so I have to go now.

I understand the re-purposing aspect of the craft, but I have such a hard time taking a book apart. Books have always been treasures to me, and it seems like sacrilege to pull the pages out. I'm not saying not to do it, and I love the lamp in the photo on the cover, but I would have such a hard time doing it myself...kind of like how I love to eat chicken, but I could never butcher one.

Hi Aime :) I have to chime in. I make Rolodex's from old books. It is easy & alot of fun. I use them for keeping mail neat & a smaller one is used for my ATC projects,like a third hand ;) If you are interested,I can tell how to make them :)

It is a wonderful and FUN book. I work at a library and we have a few of the 'ideas' from the book on the list for summer crafts with the kids. Enjoy it when your turn comes around :)
