My aunt tried to teach me to knit a number of years ago but for whatever reason, my hands and brain never clicked on this skill. My mom and I just finished 2 of the beginner classes at JoAnn's this week (and signed up for 2 more). The first class was frustrating (to say the least)! I had to put down my needles and yarn (and not so gently either!) and walk away a few times!! The only way my mom knew I was coming back was because my keys were still sitting on the table! I finally "got it" about a half hour before the first class ended. THe next class went much better (and thanks to my mom who helped me the next couple of days) and by golly I think I am on way to knitting! I am making a scarf for my daughter and will include a pair of the fingerless handgloves (I hope!) as a surprise package to her at college (she now wants to learn). I have found that knitting is very relaxing and have to keep an eye on the clock as the hours fly by!
I just want to thank all of you talented, friendly, encouraging and kind farmgirl sisters out there. I love that all of you share your talents on this forum by posting pictures of your crafts, sharing tutorials, hints, tips and encouragement. You have all inspired me to learn this new skill!!

Congrats on learning to knit! I've found that whenever I need to learn something with knitting or crocheting, Youtube has a lot of great videos to show you how. Sometimes I'll forget how to do a certain kind of stitch or something and I'll hop on youtube for a quick reminder.
I know what you mean about it just not clicking the first time. My sister tried to teach me to crochet several times when I was younger, and my brain and fingers just didn't seem to work together. But this past year my niece showed me how and suddenly my brain and fingers could communicate, and there you have it!

@Ann,I will definitely check out your blog. I am really loving knitting and can't wait to make some gifts for friends & family. I am giggling about the no-husband- shopping expeditiions! I try to avoid taking my husband shopping at all costs! Ann, I think I have had those exact conversations with my hubby!

Sabrena - so glad you didn't give up. When I was a kid, I BEGGED my mom to teach me. I could never learn from her because she was ambidextrous. She would knit with her right hand, then purl with her left. I am terminally right handed, so I just could never get it. I tried so many times over the years (and like you I had to put the needles down and walk away). Finally took a great class at our local Michael's store and GOT IT! YAY! Now I teach others to knit. How ironic?!

And Michelle and Jonni - I totally agree! I NEVER take the hubby shopping for anything - not groceries, not craft supplies, not clothes. He balks at everything I put in a cart "Do we really need 4 (choose whatever you want to fill in here)?" It doesn't matter that we have a growing boy who eats anything that's not nailed down, or that the sweater I've had my eye on for months has finally gone on clearance, and the store has 2 in my size in different colors, or that cotton yarn was on sale for $1/ball and I have a teacher's discount.

@Michelle, so true!!! It was the million dollar scarf, no joke! I think it took 15 balls of yarn and about 1500 "womanpower" hours....

It's never a good idea to take hubby to the yarn shop. He'll get a rough idea of how much you spend there and want to buy a motorcycle or something. LOL

Way to go, Sabrena!!! And don't worry, I think now and again, knitting still makes me swear, though when that starts, I do put it down and I might not pick it up for a time!
I love knitting, though I wish I had more time--I started like you, taking a class at our local knitting shop and that shoved me off, on my way. I wish I had time to take more classes, but I've been able to pick up a lot of techniques from online youtube videos, too. If you can knit and purl, that's half the battle!
Just a little advice--when your husband asks you to make a scarf, do NOT take him to the knitting store where he will pick out sockweight wool and request "one of those scarves, you know, like the British school boys wear, that wraps around and around and around..." I wasn't very familiar with yarn weights (at all) and my husband really wanted me to make him a scarf so I said, "any yarn you want!" and I worked on that scarf for almost 6 months...and I've never made one again!!!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience Sabrena - I love knitting but I never manage to work it into my schedule regularly enough to really feel truly confident about my abilities. That is one of my goals this year!
