Penny Rugs & wool-felt craft are easy peasy and relaxing.
I suspect that it would be fairly easy to even design one's own
penny rug design.

www.patternmart.com is a good source for penny rug patterns. I use felting tools to make mine instead of needle stitching. They are so much fun to make! Enjoy

I really like these too! I made a candle rug, I guess you would call it. It is snowman faces, and you set a candle on it. I really like using the wool felt for these projects. It makes it extra special!

For the girls that don't know how to make penny rugs: http://bitsofwool.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-to-make-penny-rug.html

I have always wanted to make a penny rug or two. Maybe this will be the year to get this done.

Here's an old-timey one. This was made by my husband's great grandmother. It is all wool pieces (not felted) on a wool backing.

I have a neighbor who is big into 'penny rugs'.. she makes lots of 'candle cozies' as well as wall hangings and table runners... She appliques sweet designs like leaves, critters, hearts etc, wool on wool ...
When ever I am at a Thrift shop I keep my eyes open for colorful old wool clothing,,, bring it home, wash it, cut it up and give it to her.

I have seen penny rugs made with any shapes. Like pumpkins, bunnies ect.

ruthie218 Posted - Dec 27 2011 : 5:48:35 PM
Your description of is great. I also use felt scraps.
pinokeeo Posted - Dec 27 2011 : 5:45:26 PM
A penny rug is not a rug, but a table runner or wall hanging. From what I understand, they are made from wool scraps. They are cut into medallions of different sizes and stacked and stitched together using a blanket stitch.
