Hey, gals! So sorry for you (and even MORE for me) that the "linen lady", for lack of a better name, was not at the flea market yesterday. Maybe next time.... We don't have a digital camera; André has a really good 35MM and he is one talented photographer, so when we DO go somewhere and he starts snapping I will figure out how to post them; he always gets them put on a disc and he emails pics to his far flung (HAD to use that term!!!) children. Daughters in S. Africa, Australia, and across the street from me in Norfolk VA, son in Spain and son here in France contemplating a business move to Morroco. I will see what I can find on the discs we have already.....

celtic tatting is usually harder. But there are some edging on that site that are easy.

very pretty, sunshine do you think some of the celtic edgings would be easier to learn than the tatting that we see on vintage linens? i have been able to do edgings in the past but could never get to the more dimensional items like medallions, well i could get half there and then i would have to get someone to come get me unknotted.hehehehehehehe.
let me know what you think, i am getting to old to get "knotted up" over anything.

celtic tatting has been around for about 8-12 years but it is one of the newer trends in tattings just thought I would show you some follow link

i'm in on seeing the pics to. i am not a traveler, i've hardly been out of texas, and i've never been on an airplane,but i love for people to tell me their stories about travel and i love travel shows. i would really like to see what kind of linen treasures they have in france. my dh is pretty good about garage sales, his mom is the garage sale queen and she taught him well. he always says that i buy the object that needs the most work on it, or the heaviest object to load in the truck. but he says if i can find the heaviest object that also needs the most repair, i am in heaven.

sounds fun my husband is starting to like antique stores he hates the way furniture is made now days and decided if you have to buy old to get well made then you by old.

Hey, sunshine! What a great day today; we actually got RAIN! Which is normally pretty rare in southern France anyway, but this year has been exceptionally hot and dry; there was even a watering restriction for awhile. One day our computer wouldn't even turn ON, and that night one of the TV channels was blipping in and out and after awhile the announcer apologized and said it was the HEAT that caused it!! Oysters and mussels were literally suffocating in the water, fires popping up alot; the news was full of this for about a week. I read about one guy who didn't want to lose his tomatoes with the watering ban, so he rigged up a SHOWER in his garden and (in swimming trunks thank goodness) started showering out there KNOWING that a little water would find its way to the thirsty plants!
Unfortunately for me and lucky for my husband, our village does not have an antique store, but if you hit the winding highways and backroads you come across them here and there, the trick is getting hubby to hit the BRAKE! One of the vendors at that fleamarket I just posted about has a shop with vintage materials and lace, crochet, etc. She is the lady I bought my crochet items from; THIS time I am going to get her business card and eventually make my way to her store and ogle all her treasures. I will let you know what I find. Nance |

Sunshine (gee, what a surprise that it would be you who would come to the rescue with an explanation - you do seem to be our resident expert, though!); and thanks for posting the beautiful example on that antique nightgown; I can imagine sinking down into my four poster bed surrounded by fat lavender scented pillows wearing that one and drifting off. my grandmother and all my dads sisters tatted, but i dont. i tried many years ago and was able to do some "linear" work but couldnt master the medallions. i absolutley love tatting and when i see it at garage sales i buy it up. i dont think i will ever take it up now cause i try to do things at this point in my life that kind of free me up, and when i do needle work i get kind of tight and edgey.hehehehehe
i am learning to spin and hope this winter to learn to knit, but i havent told my family about the knitting cause they'll ask about my progress and who knows ?
that reminds me, my mom used to belong to a craft group in our hometown when she was in her 70s-80s and about 5 galfriends would meet and craft and well, gossip. i knew all the ladies and was surprised that one of the ladies was a crafter, she didnt seem the type. so i asked my mom what does mrs.m.... make, what is her craft, my mom said," oh shes been working on the same crocheted hat for seven years, she mostly comes for the gossip".

I had a couple Aunts who tatted but I never learned since my grandma never did it. I learned most of my handwork type stuff from her. I hope to someday get around to learning. I have a sis in law in Calif who does both types of tatting AND the bobbin lacemaking..which I would like to learn some day too. I just wish I had about 40 hours in a day to do all the stuff I want to do. Right now I am in quilt and embroidery mode. I am sorta itching to do some spinning lately though..and that always leads to knitting. The only knitting I did all summer was some cotton dishcloths (3) that I did during the boy's swimming lessons. I helped a friend's daughter with a doily (crocheted) she was starting last week and it made me want to do that too. Yikes.
To answer your question..no, I don't tat..but wish I could. I love to see the little medallions of tatting on stationary and notecards!

I have several of my grandmothers shuttles, but never did get around to learning. I have her tatting threads, and I think there is some other stuff in there. Also some little pieces she had made ,not really anything big, but I do have a couple of dolies she made.
But the little circles she made would go really good on crazy quilting pieces Im working on |

Hi, Sunshine! I'm a beginning needle tatter - I learned from this great young woman when I was up at MJF last August, and I've really only done some edgings and simple medallions. It's so much fun!!!
