Hi and Happy Tuesday ladies.

I am thinking of learning tatting. I have been knitting for about 50 years and my hands are not as limber as they use to be. Is tatting easy to pick up?
Thanks,

I love to tat ; but haven't in awhile
I use a shuttle ; I can do the needle ; but prefer the shuttle .
my hubby's great Aunt taught me with a shuttle ; so I guess that is why I love to use it.
Now ; I want to go and tat some ; ha. hugs sheila

You ladies have inspired me to try tatting too. When my mom passes a couple of years ago, I took some of her craft things and some of it was the fine thread to use for tatting. I remember her and her mother both tatted when I was a child. Think I also have a beginners tatting book I picked up at Hobby Lobby just thinking I'd learn this craft. Guess I'd better check out my bookcase. Otherwise, I'm definetly checking out You-Tube for instructions and going back to HL to get needles.

This sounds like a good idea...my grandfather (not a typo) did beautiful tatting; unfortunately, little of his work has survived. I tried to learn as a child but couldn't stay focused. Maybe this winter I will learn!

I know I'll be checking out You-tube. Those teachers are so patient.
Of course, my needle and thread are still on the end table. Just finished knitting a set of mug rugs for DD today.

I'm just so glad to see others learning to tat. My grandmother had a cousin, Anna, who tatted. By the end of her life, she was legally blind, but still tatting away by feel. She died at the ripe old age of 96, and had tatted Christmas ornaments for many family members just months before she passed. My mother was so sad to see Anna go because Anna was the only one in the family who knew how to do this beautiful artform. Congrats to all!

Well, I finally did it..bought the needles for tatting, some thread, and pulled out Mary Jane's Stitching Book. They are sitting right next to my chair waiting for me tomorrow. I'd like to learn shuttle tatting..but will start with needle.

Batz, not sure if you ever found any but check out the InTatters forum http://www.intatters.com/forum.php I am sure one or two of the Ladies/Gentlemen were experimenting with wire...

For me I too got the beginners book on needle tatting since I for the life of me could not get it being shown...I am a lefty so it was great to see they had a section for us southpaws.....this winter since I am a silversmith I am going to try tatting thin silver wire to see if I can use it in my pieces...won't that be cool?...I know artist who knit silver & gold wire but never found anyone who tats it so that should be interesting...& yes I will work with cheap non precious metals first so if I mess it up I am not wasting the good stuff which has sky rocketed in price....Michele'

Thank you sister Heritagehunter.
Since I learn much better with instruction rather than from a book, I have checked into classes. Needle tatting is not available in my area, so I am hoping that I can convert if I need to after learning with a shuttle.

I would like to learn how to tat also. It is so pretty. Good luck learning. I think I might follow your lead and give it a try this winter too.

I have done both the needle and shuttLe tatting and can tell you that if you have problems with your hands then needle is the best way to go. It is a fun craft and once started (needles and such) fairly inexpensive.

Edlund33,
Thanks for the encouragement, I think I will.
My time is limited, (as if the rest of you have all the time you need!) so it is going to take a little while for me to get my ducks in a row and get started.
I'll get back to you once I am on the road to sucessess!

Go for it Linda! There are some good tatting videos on You-Tube. I taught myself needle tatting from Mary Jane's Stitching Room book but found the videos were also helpful as my skills advanced. I'm up to my intermediate level tatting badge and have been trying to decide what project to take on for my expert level badge. I'm hoping to try my hand with some beaded tatting snowflakes this winter.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Linda I bought a needle tatting beginner's book that also had 3 needles included. It's very easy to read, it has very good instructions and step by step pictures. I don't have anything right now. I made snowflakes and put them in frames (acrylic) so that they looked like they were in the air for Christmas gifts last year and gave all of them away. I love to tat but I haven't had alot of time lately. I've been working on dolls and a quilt.

Hi Michele,

Are you using a book or the internet? Is it easy to learn on your own?

Hi Kimberly,
I'm sure it will be awhile before I have anything to take pictures of.
Donna, do you have anything you would like to send pictures of? I too would love to see them.
