I am thinking of getting into hand made paper. I love how handmade paper looks and feels and I end up with so much paper junk that I'm thinking about recycling the non-glossy stuff (I've read that the glossy magazine style paper is too full of chemicals and doesn't break down well, don't know if it's true or not...) into hand made jar labels, and other paper goodies.
Anyway, I'm a certified craft clutz, but this doesn't seem too hard and the paper is so lovely! Who else here makes paper?

Hallo Girls...
I work at a Juice/Concentrate production plant. Today we did apples and I got a small pail of apple shavings that I thought would be great in artist paper. I've seen demonstrations on paper making and have wanted to try it myself. I plan to dry the apple shavings and over the next couple of months try my hand at papermaking. This week's apples were Washington State Reds, Grannys, Galas & Fugis. So the shavings are a multi blend of red/green/pink.... very interesting. A couple of weeks ago we did all Golden Delicious.... so the shavings were a very blond pale. I also have a huge lavender plant out front that would be a nice addetive to paper.
If anyone is interested in Apple Shavings... I'm willing to share.

I did it for years & even taught my students when i taught art to make paper.....the glossy is hard not becuase of chemicals but the binders they use won't break sown with just soaking....& the dyes end up creating a mud color that you have to use bleach to get rid of...soy ink is used in newspapers which also creates a gray color but with lots of clear water rinses you can get rid of alot of it without going for the bleach bottle....I liked the mild gray as it muted the colors I added...pink became a dusty rose, purple became a gray purple that was quite pretty....Now a days I think they make a additive that will help strip out the colors but I am not sure what chemicals they are using for it....I would tear my paper up into strips...put it on the stove with white vinegar & water & let it boil for a few hours adding water as I went along as it boiled down.....I let it cool down, drained the water off of it but not all so that I could put it in a blender, put that in a separate pot with clean water & boil again to get any color I didn't want out....then if I wanted it whiter once cool I would rinse it over & over again...nice thing is if you can't get back to it you can put it in baggies/bags & freeze it til you can get to it again...I had a old metal window screen I used to make the sheets of paper with...it was nice cause I could do many sheets at once & set it outside to dry in the sun.....if I wanted plant items in it I added those just before I poured it onto the screen...I had a lot of fun doing it & now that you have brought it up it may be something I have to do again :)......Michele'
