Posted - Sep 10 2011 : 6:29:00 PM Hello Farmgirls, I'm thinking ahead on my Christmas gifts this year. Does any one have some ideas/patterns/projects for homemade, useful, pretty Christmas gifts? I would like to earn my beginner Homespun Christmas badge this year :-)
Thanks!

Posted - Oct 28 2011 : 6:27:13 PM Hi Linda,
I just throw the sweater in the washing machine in Hot water, regular cycle. You should be able to see that it has shrunk provided it is 100% wool. I then just put it in the dryer. Not sure if this is the correct way of doing it, but it works for me :)

Posted - Oct 24 2011 : 08:32:41 AM Today I am working on fabric pocket tissue holders. These will be stocking stuffers and I think I will do a few extra to put into gift baskets. They are super simple and I can use up some scraps, so a really cheap gift.

Posted - Oct 24 2011 : 04:29:40 AM Ooooh. The cinnamon apples and pears are canned pears and apples with those red hots in with them. They can be used for cakes, pies, as ice cream topping...I also give candied pecans as gifts to others, too.

Posted - Sep 18 2011 : 6:33:36 PM I love those non scratch crotched scrubbies. So handy in the kitchen. If you want to go the food route and you can and dehydrate and such you could make up little gift baskets with the scrubbies and home made delights.

Posted - Sep 18 2011 : 4:58:19 PM Rice bags make wonderful gifts. I make them with two different fabrics, one for the bag itself and another for a "slip cover" leaving one end open, hem it and sew in ribbon to tie it closed. The cover can be removed to wash and keeps the inside bag clean. I've sold lots of them at Farmers Market and bazaars. I have two and use both of them almost every night. CJ

Posted - Sep 18 2011 : 4:02:24 PM I am making pillow cases for my family. Looking for fabric and scraps to appeal to each intrest. For example, my daughter likes moons and stars so I made hers out of some moon and star fabric I had. My grandfather loved to golf, and for his 99th birthday in July I made him a pillow case out of some golf material. Old sheets work as do XL men's shirts.

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 8:04:21 PM Breanna,
I don't have any patterns but I have been purchasing wool sweaters from the thrift store and felting them. I want to make tea cozies, coffee cup cozies (using the sleeves),fingerless gloves (also with the sleeves), and handwarmers (the felted wool cut into squares, stitched together allowing room to add rice and stitch back up). I just plan on embellishing the items with pieces of felt (flowers or leaves) and buttons (not for the handwarmers though).
We are also giving homemade canned items for gifts and my husband has been making soap too :)

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 7:19:31 PM I'm getting baskets from the thrift store and putting home goodies in them catering specifically to the person I'm giving the basket too. I'm doing things like Chicken Soup in a Jar (all they add is water), pumpkin bread cooked in a jar( my grandma got that as a gift last year and it was incredibly moist she said, plus there was a thread in the kitchen section on them), 1/4 pint of homemade jelly or jam, possibly a mug I get from the dollar store and write a little phrase on it and give them some homemade hot cocoa or some of my favorite tea packets complete with a chocolate dipped spoon!!! (What a great way to find a use for those random spoons at the thrift store!)

Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 5:14:22 PM I've been using scraps to make coasters. I use two printed pieces with a felt middle. Make a pocket, insert felt, topstitch the edges, then machine quilt my design of choice. I have also see homemade neck wraps. They are a snake shape filled with rice and lavender to microwave for relaxation. I've wanted to do the same with an eye cover...like an eye-sleep thing...can't think of the "official" name. Anyway, fill with rice and lavender to freeze or microwave for eye pampering. It may make for a great pampering gift.
