Hi Farmgirls,

For some reason I have always been intrigued by all things chalkboard, and the use of chalk. A couple of weeks ago I ran into the link below and absolutely fell in love with the idea of having a single chalkboard wall in a house or apartment. Do you ladies think it would be a creative, fun idea, or a just turn out to be more of a mess than a pleasure?

Would love to hear what you guys think!

Or if a permanent wall is too much, try painting something smaller like one of those carvable pumpkins they sell in craft stores, or a shaker box.

Oooo. I like this idea, especially since you can change colors. Very good.

Mel,

What a great idea! Totally customizable :) Celeste, was your experience using the paint good? Did you have any issues or would you suggest anything to make the process an easy going one?

Thanks!

And when he's tired of it, you can easily change it to something else.

Thank you ladies for your replies :)

Megan, the more fridges the merrier lol if you do decided to paint it please let me know how you're experience goes :)

And I agree that a border would be a great finish!

btw, love your tagline "Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world." just made my whole day haha

Adding a border really does set it off and makes a nice finish for it. Otherwise it looks unfinished.

I've been thinking of doing my extra fridge (Yes, I have two in my kitchen right now!) in chalkboard paint. My only concern would be the area underneath the handles getting yucky. But what a non-cluttery way to keep tallies of what's in your freezer/fridge?! A friend of mine has a section of a lower wall that's the chalkboard paint-and it's odd looking in just a section-they should've either painted a boarder (faux-frame) or painted the whole lower portion of the wall, in my opinion.

I love the bright colors of the chalk ink!

I also see I forgot to say WHO's home we used to visit in the ozarks, it was the woman who invented the kewpie doll, her child hood home was in the ozarks and it was decorated with newspaper clippings and magazine clippings! I loved it!

I also like the magnetic wall idea. In NYC we had big metal doors, I had stuff stuck on them from top to bottom, was great for pics and drawings. I always have gotten all the pics at say the circus and what not, I always pay the few extra dollars for the magnetic picture frame to come with it. I figure it's a better memento then the cheap crap they sell at outrageous prices, it's usually cheapest thing they have too. Well we did buy the lights one year, cause all kids love those darn lights, but we are sneaky! We save the lights, and put them up after a week or so after the circus, and then drag them back out when the next circus comes to town and it's "new" all over again to the kids, but we only had to buy them once! lol We take them to all the circus's and disney on ice stuff etc! lol The same ones! lol

I could have sworn I've seen it in a BHG magazine for doing a whole wall as a monthly calendar.

We have chalkboard paint on the inside of our pantry door. I write groceries lists, things that we need, dates to remember, that sort of thing. It's handy, and it's cute to see when opening the door. I'm not sure about the "aesthetically pleasing quality" of a whole wall, though--my friend has this in her hallway which she's made a sort of "staging area" for the schedule of the day. She has 3 children and keeps them on schedule this way. It's actually a huge wall of a graph, with colored drawn pictures and spots for them to "check off" what they've done each day and then she signs off when they're out the door. I think it looks...messy. And cloudy. But that's me. It seems to help them because for someone who is always notoriously 40 minutes late to anything, she's been on time :)

In addition to that, I have a rather large school sized chalk board in my kitchen that I got at an estate sale that I use. It's both wall art and functional. We draw on it for holidays and write messages to each other. When our daughter is older, I plan on leaving her chores and things to do on it, but it's attached to the wall, not the wall

A magnetic wall?! Now that's being creative Deb. Chalk ledge is a smart idea! Alee, glad to know someone has already had great success with this and that maintenance shouldn't be too horrible. Pinokeeo, thank you for sharing the formula!!! You guys are making me too excited to start this project hahaha. Diane, thanks for making me laugh out loud while at work. Hope you ladies are having a wonderful day!

We have one in what used to be our school room. Now it's dd's bedroom. The chalk dust does get messy. My dh put a piece of trim up under the bottom of the board to act as a chalk ledge. It does a pretty good job of catching the dust.

Ours is huge - entire wall. 15' x 6'. My girls loved it when they were small.

We also have a magnetic wall in the basement. Cool way to hang the girls artwork.

That was funny! And you can just paint over it now and then to refresh it. But you do have to season it again each time.

They also have a formula now where you can mix your own colors of chalk to make different wall colors. You need one cup of acrylic paint and two tablespoons of non-sanded tile grout. That way you can make the wall any color you want.

I have a friend that sanded the texture off a section of the wall and then did the chalkboard paint. She said it was easy and it looked great. I thought it was a real chalkboard. Also the nice thing with the paint is you can always "refresh" the chalkboard if needed to get back to the rich background color.

Ladies,

I am so glad you all think it's a creative idea! Pinokeeo, thank you for passing along the advice, I probably would have been devastated if I painted a chalkboard wall only to have everything I first wrote/drew on it stuck there forever. MagnoliaWhisper, I think "wallpapering" a wall like a collage is a wonderful, unique, vintage idea that I might just take up one day haha. Also, thank you for sharing the link, chalk ink looks like a great alternative to using chalk, and a lot less messy!

I think it would be AWESOME. Such fun. I've seen where someone did a door like that in a child's room. Wouldn't that be fun? My kids have a chalkboard to use in our school room so I doubt I'll end up doing an entire wall or anything but if you've got the room do it!

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories
MagnoliaWhisper Posted - Aug 15 2011 : 10:50:14 PM
I like it too, of course I also like the way people back in the 20's and such in the ozarks and in the south cut out pretty things from magazines and what not and "wallpapered" their rooms with them! lol haha I am not sure if it's still standing today but used to where we went in the ozarks you could go up and look at her house, and she had decoupaged it with newspapers and magazines! It was falling down when I was little though and on state park property so I have no idea if it's even still standing.

That being said, I really like this review on the Sugar Pie site of the ink chalk for such! http://www.sugarpiefarmhouse.com/reviews/page/3

I did this on a pocket door in my craft room. I love it. I can write notes to myself, make diagrams, or whatever I want.

Just make sure that if you do it, you season your wall before you start writing on it. Otherwise you will always see whatever you wrote first.

I would love to do this when we move. My youngest would have a great time with it and I think I even might be tempted to write on it - quotes, drawings, whatever. I don't think they are tacky at all! I think they are totally creative!
