Does anyone know where I can get chicken scratch patterns? My mother in law made curtains years ago using this technique. I had a chance to ask her about it today. She says it is called chicken scratch, it's like counted cross stitch on gingham fabric. There was a picture of an apron in a past issue of mjf magazine that caught my eye, but did not know what the technique was called.

Guess it's been awhile since I've signed on. I don't "talk" much (hence the low number of posts- lol) I enjoy listening!
Heather and Tanya -Thanks for all the valuable links/sources. Katherine, bigger checks sound good to start with, I've been getting frustrated with my "getting old" eyesight and trying to adjust to bifocals - ugh!

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

I love Feeling Stitchy too, it's one of my favorite stitching sites. I also like Doe-c-Doe, http://bigbgsd.blogspot.com, and Vintage Transfer Finds.

Funny thing one day I was reading Doe-C-Doe and thinking hmm these pictures sure do look like places I have been. The more pics I seen she posted the most I was like I know these places! So I did some more reading on her and found out she lives near me! lol haha And I had been reading her blog for like 5 or more years by that point and had had no idea all that time she lived near me! lol haha

Oh, I love chicken scratch! I remember doing some myself when younger. And, I just ran across a luncheon cloth (yellow and white gingham) given to DH when his GM passed. I believe she made it. Would like to try this again!

Brenda, you could use bigger checked or gingham square fabric to practice if seeing is a problem. I've done a little chicken scratch.

Looks like I just need to grab some gingham and thread and just start practicing! It would probably be a good project for me to startup. I used to do counted cross stitch years ago, haven't done any needlepoint in probably 20 yrs. My eyes are older now - need to start with bigger patterns - lol

Google it and you will find tons. Mainly you just want to know the different kinds of "stitches" that you can use to make it more or less interesting, even just x's though can be pretty cute, but there is different stitches that can be used to make it more interesting etc as well. Basically I think most chicken scratch though is free hand and not based on a particular pattern, but rather you are making the pattern how you want using the different chicken scratch stitches as you like.
