Does anyone out there work on doll house miniatures? I mean the 12-1" scale. I am in the process of building a 3 story mansion with 15 lights in the interior and am now laying the floor board by board. Was wondering if anyone else had this disease?

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.

That's a great idea. It will increase my chances of finding something!
I'd love to see pictures when you have the time.

You could start by looking for a house that needs to be refurbished. Someone gave me one that is a mess and I'm redoing it. I also bought a cheap kit for $5 at the local thrift store and I will be building that one with my own touches. I also have one in progress where I bought the blueprints and I'm building everything from scratch.

I'll get a pic up soon of the one I have that is mostly complete.

I cannot master those things that I have not tried.

I've already checked Craig's list and free cycle with no luck but I will keep looking!

Check out the thrift stores. I picked up the Colonial house for $5.00 and then finished it off to sell. It was made with 3/4" plywood so is very sturdy. I finished that house in 2 months because I didn't wire it and didn't have to wait for anyone else to work on it. I put $200.00 into it and sold it for $450.00 plus having the fun of working on it.

And I agree with you that creative people do have messy work spaces. You should see my sewing roon! At least 4 or 5 projects going on at one time. But, that is the beauty of doors on rooms, close the door and walk away. LOL

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.

I think creative people often have messy work spaces. The rest of my house is always neat and clean but not my craft room! There are always at least three things going in there. But that is the beauty of having such a space isn't it? Finish for the moment and walk away with out having to put it all away.
Goodness even wiring sounds interesting. I'll be on the look out for a house to work on this winter.

My husband did all the wiring for the electric. He used wire not tape as he says wire holds up better. However, it takes a LOT longer to do the wiring and you have to groove it into the floor or ceiling, whatever. The wiring is attached to a converter that plugs into the wall. I wanted to learn to do this myself but gave up and asked him to do it. It has taked him since February as he has COPD and cannot work for very long at a sitting. Needless to say I have been chomping at the bit and that is why I've been working on the furniture, outside railing, etc. Don't want to rush him with my impatience. Like, WHAT? When it's finished then what? LOL.
Would love to see photos of your house, finished or not. I agree with you, a miniature house is never quite finished.
I am an artist and that is why I am putting in an art studio. I hope I don't make it as messy as my real art studio!

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.

I'll have to get some photos of the one I have that's mostly finished. I don't think a miniature house is ever really complete.

How did you do the lighting? Step-down transformers or battery power?

I cannot master those things that I have not tried.

An art studio! That will be so much fun to put together. Don't forget to put paint splatters on the floor! LOL Or maybe make a drop cloth for under the easel with paint on it. Oh boy, here I go designing your house for you. I need to get my own! You have fed that bug that bit me some time ago!
I'd love to see some pics of your furnishings.

The white attic room on the left is the art studio and the room on the right is another guest room. I am doing miniature paintings on little canvases that I made for the art studio. Since the inside work is so tedious I'm working on the furnishings to break the monotoney (is that a word?) Still have to cut the floor boards for the downstairs dining room and living room and then cut the floor boards for the attic. I feel like I could build a REAL house at this point.

Will someone share photos of their houses, I'd love to see them.

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.

This one is a farm house updated. I am refinishing it as if I was going to live in it! Have been working on it since February. Since it is so big my daughter asked where I was going to put it after it's finished. I told her "No problem, it will never be finished. LOL I did a Victorian several years ago and this year I did a Colonial and an art studio. Such madness. :-) I stopped adding up the cost when I reached $1,000.00 and I'm still not finished.

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.

Susan, will it be a farm house or a victorian? It is lovely. Keep us updated!

Susan, just click on the little square icon right next Message: on the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. Then click on the file in your computer for the picture you want to upload and then click the upload button. The picture should appear in a few minutes on your quick reply post. Hope that helps.

I think you need a photobucket account or something. There's no way to upload pictures directly to this website.

I have a little log cabin that was originally a birdhouse I got at Michal's. I painted it and took off the back so I could decorate it. I found some miniature furniture at an antique store, but it's just a little too big for scale. i've been meaning to visit a store that specializes in miniatures in the St. Louis area, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

You might also try nutshell news.com. I think they are still in business.

I've built them from kits and from blueprints. Kits are a great way to get started. You can also modify kits as you go along, to get your own taste. There's also a way to modify a kit so that it looks "stick built".

I've also built my own furniture from kits. I'll have todig out one of my kits to see who the manufacturer is.

I started with a kit that I bought at a garage sale for $5.00, NO instructions. Still have it. Turned out nice but am on to bigger things. Yike! This one will take me a Looooong time I'm afraid. As to laying the floor- my husband cut strips of cherry for me and I've already glued 1/3 of the flooring down. Next time I will try the paper backing method. I use the web site Miniatures.com and have had great success. Not like going to a store and buying but at least they are discount and mail out rather quickly. Also, if you go to e-bay and type in dollhouse miniatures you will be amazed at what you can bid on. Between the two sites I get into a lot of trouble!

OK, I'm ready-Let's go.
