What really bugs me is when I can't think of the right word or I know what it is but I've mangled it so badly that I can't even find it in the dictionary! I like to think of it this way, I may be a poor speller but I have other talents and Sunshine your talents make me envious. I know I'm a pretty good crafter but you are awesome!

It is so annoying when you know hwat you want to say and your mind just can't find the right letters to make you sound intelligent thank you for your post. It was nice that your mother helped you with spelling with me it was my grandmother my mother wasn't up to raising kids and spelling is one of her worst features, not to be mean but it is worse than mine. But that is life and we go on.

Sunshine, I feel your pain about spelling. I wasn't ill as a child but we moved a lot and I got stuck with one school teaching rote spelling and then the next one teaching phonics. I have to admit that it bothers me that my spelling is poor and I nearly always have webster.com open to check words that I'm not sure of. And I've been known to copy a message into word so it can look for misspelled words. But one of my fondest memories of my mom is her helping me spelling the word academy. I have never forgotten the spelling and it always makes me smile when I think of my mom working so hard to help me with spelling. She was an excellent speller dispite having no advance education. So you aren't the only one who is spelling challenged. And as Nance says you certainly make yourself understood.

Both of you have been nice to say it doesn't matter. I know that personally but some people are mean at times when they see that a person doesn't spell well or have great grammer ( one in the same problem). I just had to work harder to get through school. Luckily half way through collage I married a great speller and he would edit all my papers for me ( I think it about drove him nuts but he was kind about the whole thing).

Sunshine, spelling is not as important as making yourself understood and you do that "in spades"! (Don't know what happened to my original post but I "lost" it somehow when I clicked on "post new reply" - drats!) Maybe your childhood illness had a silver lining because your grandma introduced you to your future passion/livelihood! I inherited a beautiful crocheted bedspread that my grandma made. The needle arts skipped a generation because although my mom sewed clothes for us, she did not knit, crochet, embroider, that I remember. And oh how I wish I had paid more attention as a teenager when she tried to teach me to sew!! I gotta get back to your blog and check out the dress you are making for Nancy's Effie! And the bobbin lace doily I bought at Chantilly is certainly machine bobbin lace because it was only 9 Euros(equal to about 10 US dollars). The only difference my untrained eye sees is that it is a bit stiffer and the individual stitches are more easily seen. If I come across bobbin lace doilies again, I will buy one for you and Nancy and send them on so you can see the difference! Anyway, keep inspiring us to practice our crafts! Nance

I went to BYU and COS BYU = brigham young university (Utah) and cos= Collage of the Sequias in California (junior collage at the time) alot of stuff I learned in collage alot I learned on my own through books some from shows on cable when I had it educational stations, and some through community ed I believe no one is to young or to old to learn something new.
I have a associates in fine art and as associates in liberal arts missed have an associate in litterature by one class and missed an associates in social science by one class just had to go on to the next collage and did not want to hang around 1 more semester at the jc for two more pieces of paper that don't mean a whole lot to me. I also have a Bachelors in Fine art ( emphases where in sculpture, book binding, printmaking) ( I'm not a painter at all). I also have aminor in Art history.

I keep my projects every where evey drawer in my house that is not for clothes is for project boxes under furniture in closets you name it it is every where but hidden. antique sea trunk full of rug supplies and crochet supplies

Nancy, When I first saw your question, I almost replied that Sunshine would know. And Sunshine, I know that you have said what your degree is in but can you tell us again and what college you went to. I wish my college would have had something like that. The closest I ever got was a restoration program for antiques. It was a 7 year program and at 24 years old 7 years looks like forever. I wish I had known back then to dream big or had the courage to do so.

Black lace is real hard on the eyes to make. Lots of bobbin lacers went blind doing that stuff. Black lace was popular during the reign of gueen Victoria thus the victorian age she worn black in morning and every one followed suit older lace would have been white ( ecru by now). It is true bobbin lace is and was expensive if you buy the real stuff made by hand not machine. Traditianally the people making the lace could not afford to buy or keep their own lace as it would fetch such a high price it was better to feed a poor family than to wear a piece of lace.

thank you Nancy that means alot from soemone who has seen old lace . My dream is to actually own an old victorian some day have the top floor be a studio where people learn how to make differnt laces, and embroider the next to floors down a museum and the bottom floor be a store where local artisans can sell their wears, I know lots of lacers as I belong to the local guild. i think this would be fun and to help people who only think they themselves value their talent and can't find anyone to sell to.

NANCE IN FRANCE,
When I posted the question about bobbin lace I was 100% sure that Sunshine was going to be the one to answer it. I'am going to send her the book, it has 100 bobbin lace patterns in it. Like I would ever use it, NOT! I have enough trouble with the one bobbin in my singer sewing machine. That Sunshine is one handy girl. She is making an outfit for my doll EFFIE,did you see that on her blog?
Lucky you to have a bobbin lace doily, how does that look different then another doily? Should I ever come across one I will know, and of course buy it, unless I have to mortgage the house to do so.
I think I will go on google and see what they have to say, I think I will see if I can see pictures of "chantilly castle", since I doubt I will be going there anytime soon.
Thanks for the info Nance.

As my grandpa used to say (usually right after a big sneeze) "Great day in the morning!" Sunshine, is there anything you CAN'T do? The bobbin lace is exquisite and that lovely little crocheted dress, too. About 15 years ago I had the good luck to visit an old Tudor style home in Norfolk that has been turned into a museum. They were showing an exposition of antique lace items. Oh, the wedding gowns, the handkerchiefs, collars, etc. were truly awesome. It is easy to understand why only the very wealthy could afford to wear lace centuries ago. My husband and I visited a castle called Chantilly, near Paris. Remember the song with the words "chantilly lace and a pretty face...."? The castle had lots of examples of this old bobbin lace, and traditionally, it was all made with black thread! At another landmark I bought a small rectangular bobbin lace doily very inexpensively priced. Keep up the good work; you are an inspiration! Have a great day, Nance
