Posted - Apr 24 2011 : 06:16:49 AM Last year I ordered some fiber from our very own Grace Gerber. I finally spun some last night and this morning. The color is called "Grace's Greens" its a beautiful combination of Alpaca, Cashmere, Mohair, Silk and a dash Angelina for sparkle. It spun like a dream and I love the color. It sure made me smile. This was perfect way to start my Easter Morning.
Of course I can't forget my helper...Sierra
Hope everyone has a Happy Easter.

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 2:52:00 PM Hi Karen - dog hair can be too warm and does not have a crimp so it is best to blend with some type of wool. That will keep the fiber from shedding and also growing with wear. I also like to treat them like I do Bunny Fur with the final step after spinning is the soft felting. This will plump up the fiber and also trap them. I love spinning dog fur and cat fur. Did you know that there is a sweater designer in Toyko who get 10,000.00 for his cat sweaters??? See I keep telling myself I am in the wrong market. Let me know if I can be of any help. I also have a book on spinning and working with dog fur for sale if you are at all interested - sorry for the business plug but you know that hay bill will be coming soon and I have many mouths to feed...
Happy spinning.

Posted - Apr 27 2011 : 03:51:04 AM Grace you must be a mind reader, I have been saving Sierra's undercoat in a grocery bag and one from my foster Golden, Lance too. I have seen the beautiful "Chiengora" on Ravelry. http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/spinning-dog-fiber-aka---spinnin-chien/651836/1-25
I'm unsure if I should keep saving and spin the dog fiber by itself or have it carded with something else. I'm a novice yet at spinning so I may defer to you for advice.
I was told to use Chiengora in a very open or lacey way as it's very warm, almost too warm for some things.

Posted - Apr 26 2011 : 3:52:49 PM OH Karen - I am so Thrilled that you are enjoying the batt and thank you so much for the kind words... I love the animals I raise, love getting to work with their incredible fibers and then make something that can bring joy to others. You did a fantastic job spinning and can not wait to see it finished... You did my fiber very proud!!!! I love your sweet one on the floor - we could make a great batt our of that lovely golden hair... Just a thought because I am sure there is enough floating around - right??
Again thank you for showing what I do - Blessings

Karen, your spinning is just beautiful! What pretty yarn you will have to work with. I can only dream of spinning that well. So far, I haven't figured out my drop spindle.
