Hi Ladies. I am new to the merit badge gig but not new to crafting. I have been sewing, crocheting, embroidering, etc for more than 15 years. I am having a hard time with the statement that you can't have old accomplishments grandfathered in. How does this work when the basic badges contain skills that you already know how to do and accomplish? Like in embroidery it discusses making a sampler. To me, a sampler is like the alphabet, or a whole selection of different stitches. I have embroidered lots of things, and lots of things when I have been a farmgirl this past year, but I am not sure if any of them qualify as a sampler?

And then what about the sew wonderful badge? Put together a sewing kit. Okay. I have sewing stuff in like three rooms. Do I just put together what I already have? this confuses me because I have a sewing kit. Does this mean I have to make another one? Take photos of the one I have? I am unsure of how to approach this. Also, I know how to sew a straight seam, and other seams by hand and machine. I sew every week. Do I just take some photos of sewing projects I have completed since I have been a member? I am not sure what the whole "grandfathered in" thing means here.

Creating a button collection. I have one. Do I just take pictures of it, or is this considered to be an old accomplishment and I have to make a NEW one?

I have the same issue with the one about organic beef. I grew up raising Grass fed beef with my family. I had my own cattle in addition to helping with my dad's, and did all kinds of cattle projects and education for FFA, and then went to school for Agribusiness Management and have a certificate in Beef Science and another in Animal Nutrition. Can I apply for What's your beef? I can't re-learn things that I already know, so I am not sure how this would work. I can certainly expand on them to get to the expert level, I assume I would have to start over with a new beef cow in order for this to count?

I am sorry that this doesn't necessarily fit in here, but I could NOT figure out where to put a question like this. Thanks :)

Meagan- If you just did your renewal some times it can take a few days for it to be updated. I would recommend eamiling brianogle@maryjanesfarm.org since he is the one that handles the memberships and updates the hexagons and accesses to the Sisterhood areas.

Meagan- it is a yearly membership and since I don't see the red hexagon under your name you might want to check with the office to see when your membership expires. However, any merit badge earning activities while an active Sister can be submitted for a badge! So if you know all the information (start date etc) then they should qualify! :)

Meagan- Only projects and such that are started after you buy your sisterhood membership are admissable. Have you joined the sisterhood?

thanks! Now since I have been a farmgirl for a year now, pretty much anything that I have been working on in the last year is admissable, right?

Thanks Alee. All that was required was a little shift in perception!

Denise- I couldn't agree more! I need to post a picture of a sampler that a farmgirl friend gave me. It hangs on my wall in my bedroom so I can see it every day. It is beautiful, sweet, and I can see tucking it in Nora's hope chest for her home when she is old enough. :)

Thanks for the info, Alee. Those are questions I had before as well, and your answer is very helpful!

This Merit Badge thing is kind of addicting; I see a badge opportunity, and I think, "ooohhhh, a new project that I wanted to do anyway!" As in, I'm in the midst of designing a sampler either for my sewing room or for winter. I love how the badges inspire my creativity.

Hi ladies!

The reasoning behind the "No old knowledge being grandfathered in" is because it would be really easy for very accomplished ladies such as yourself, Meagan to achieve all the merit badges for life experiences that you "brought to the table" so to speak. The merit badges are meant to be somewhat elastic to help accomodate farmgirls of all ages and abilities.

To take from one of your questions the sewing kit. You might have an awesome sewing room and have all of the supplies on hand which is great. To get the beginner level all you need to do is put together a basic sewing kit which could be something that you give to a friend or family member or even something you tuck in your luggage for emergency repairs when traveling. One of the badges has you get rid of any non-toxic cleaners. However many ladies already had done that years ago so we allow people to make up a cleaning kit to give to a family member for example.

For your question about What's Your Beef, I think the idea behind the beginning level is to expand your knowledge. I think it is awesome that you have raised your own beef cattle before. Excellent! To qualify for the beginner part of this badge I think they are looking for you to find some other resources that back up what you already know- again reaffirming and expanding knowledge is the goal. Also the second part is to write down a little bit about what you learned and if it changed your mind. If you are already solidly behind the grass fed beef movement (or not) and what you learned hasn't changed how you feel- that is totally fine! :)

For the button collection- I would start a new one since the time of becoming a new member and maybe offer it for barter if you want to or even add to your current collection. Either would be great.

And for badges that are looking for a specific skill to be gained (such as sewing a straight line) I would take pictures of your next sewing project that exhibits those skills.

The goal of the badges isn't to make you feel like you have to start all your experiences over from the beginning. Each one of us can learn so much by seeing the badge submissions of other sisters. I know I have learned so much by going back and trying each level of various badges.

I am currently working on my sampler. I know a lot of the basic embroidery stitches and even some more difficult ones. However I decided that for my sampler I am going to really challenge myself to learn some more fancy stitching and some stitches that seem a bit "lost in time". There are lots of sampler patterns out there that aren't always the school girl sampler of the alphabet. Maybe one of those would interest you more?

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help you in any way I can! :)
