My grandmother is a master florist ( yes there is such a thing funny to think about). In her shop as in most flower shops everyone wears an apron I have since worked in 5 different flower shops and always wore an apron and did so when I work at Kids r us too (I think they are out of busines now) So I started as a child at grandma's shop and it continued through out life just wondering if any one remembers how their "HABBIT" started.
My kids wear one at ever meal with an 8, 6, and 4 year old food seems to go every were especially the 4 year old I don't remember her sisters being so messy maybe I am forgetfull. I also wear aprons at dinner I have two from collage that I used in printmaking classes so they have big splashs of litho ink and paint on them. I have two from differnt flower shops I worked at 4 from kids R us they changed colors while I worked there and the main manager just gave them to me as he was going to through them out I have an organdy one I wear when company is around then I have 3 canvas one I embroidered on for the girls and 3 other canvase ones the girls wear when at the dry erase board drawing; these have hugh pockets to hold the markers and erasers. I really need to make some cute ones mine are mostly industrial since that is what I used for work and art classes. It was always the joke in art class you could tell the artist by how much ink and paint where on their aprons a new student was always easy to tell. Funny I guess aprons cover lots my life and I never thought about it much. I used them at home, work, school, and now on my kids. My husband even wears them ( I have a denium one from collage he wears). Funny one time he wore the organdy one it was my daughters basptism and he was helping me serve food (I was wearing the embroiderd one) and could not find the denium or any of them but that one so he wore it (I really should have gotten a piture). To see a grown man that benches 350 pounds, 6 feet tall, weighs over 200 lbs who shaves his head and wears a goaty wearing and organdy apron was a scream every one was laughing.

I ruined too many clothes cooking without an apron. When I really started to bake bread and cakes regularly. I used a dish towel pined to my skirt or pants. After tearing a hole in my favorite pair of scruffy pants. I made my first apron, a no pattern simple gingham one. I loved it. I then started to search for other paterns and became addicted to my newest collection.
I just bought 3 Paisley pincushion apron patterns today,the Shopkeeper, Reversable and scalloped I'd like to get the other three they offer. They were 40% off. |

My Grandmother and Mother wore aprons. My grandmother also wore a hair net when she was in the kitchen. No she did not work in a cafteria, she wanted no hair in her kitchen. I started wearing aprons as a young bride....The main reason I wear aprons to day is, I am messy, messwy messy and I don't take the time to change into something that is old and worn before I cook.
As stated before, I have spots that I can not get out of many of my clothes, so an apron is a wise investment for me. My children and grandchildren still remark about me and my aprons. My aunt made so many aprons for me...She died this year and I "inherited " her sprons. !!! |

My Grandma and Mom always wore them too. I'm not much on cooking but I have a beautiful embroidered one my great-aunt made me that I always wear on Christmas Day.
Actually I wear aprons for other things. I have one I wear when I work on pottery. And I wear one when I'm stripping furniture. These are not very pretty but they sure are functional. I'm thinking of making some Kitchen aprons and hanging them out in plain sight. Even if I forget to use them they will be fun to look at.
What does everyone prefer, cobblers aprons or just the kind you tie at the waist?
I like cobblers aprons since I'm real messy. |

I wear them because I am soooo messy! My husband even calls me grandma, not because of the apron wearing, but because his grandma always spilled things on herself too! LOL Now my girls go to the apron rack and pull off a different apron, according to the task, tie it on and go! I LOVE that. We have a new generation of little girls wanting to wear aprons. I am thinking of making some nursing aprons. I would put lots of pockets and nooks and crannies and places to hang things on. They would have to be tough and hot water washable. Perhaps start a whole new trend in nursing gear! LOL

abbasgurl if that happens again pour straight ammonia on the stain and rub a little to to make sure it touches all the stain then through it in the washing machine with your normal detergent you might be amazed it has gotten gravy, grape juice, red popscycle and alot of things like that out of my kids clothes when they forget their apron.

My Gram, who taught me to cook & can, ALWAYS wore an apron. I followed her example-try to in most things. I wear an apron when I dye or paint dolls & craft things too. Otherwise I end up with splotches of color on my clothing. I forgot my apron last week when I was pitting sour cherries. The shirt I had on came out of the laundry with little brown speck all over the front! Lesson learned-never forgo wearing your apron!

I grew up watching both of my grandmas and my mom wearing aprons. So it comes pretty naturally. I wear one cause I do get stuff on my clothes. I like that I can dry my hands, or wipe them off on my apron skirt.
I have also collected a few just for fun. I will have some vinatge ones for sale at the Farm Fair as well.
I usually wear one when I do craft shows. It gives me pockets to keep stuff in.

I have worn one about forever. My grandma...who taught us to cook and all...made anyone who helped in her kitchen wear an apron (she had a big hook in the kitchen with several hanging there at all times) and then made my sister and I aprons when we were kids too. I am just too messy to NOT wear one...I like the full body ones best..cause I make full body messes!! But I do wear half aprons sometimes and have some cute ones. I put mine on first thing in the morning and take it off last thing before I go to bed at night. I don't wear them to town unless I forget to take one off..but if I am home the apron is on!!
