Hello Farmgirls,
Some of you may have helped in the past knitting wool hats for Tibetan babies. Unfortunately the Chinese government did not renew the contract with One HEART Tibet so we are unable to send hats there anymore. Hopefully the hats we sent will be passed on and the skills they learned will carry on and help mothers and infants in the future.
I have found a nurse who travels to Mongolia each year to teach safe birthing practices and deliver medical supplies. She would be more than happy to deliver hats to the babies there along with the team she travels with.
The weather in Mongolia gets so cold (it is very close to Siberia so that tells us a little) and the government controls the heat in homes in the city so new mothers have no control over the temperature in their home when they have a new baby. Hats will be used for infants in the city as well as Nomads. I have read that the temperature can drop as low as minus 50 degrees outdoors in some places.
In 2010 the Red Cross determined that Mongolia lost 4.5 million livestock due to lack of feed from a poor year of grass growth and frigid temperatures. They have had quite a struggle there.
I would like to get as many infant hats that I can gather to her by the end of May since she will be traveling there this summer.
If any of you can help it would be very appreciated. Since it is so cold there wool fiber would be best but wool blends would be O.K. also. The hats will be hand carried around the world and delivered to very appreciative mothers who I am certain will pass them on to other infants when they are outgrown. Knit or crochet would be great in any pattern you choose. I believe infant size hats should be 16 1/2" circumference.
Let me know if you can help. A tiny hat takes just a small amount of yarn and scrap yarn works great. They are also quite fast to make. No competition in how many you are able to make. One is plenty if that is all the time or materials you have. Just think how many Mongolian infants one tiny hat could help if it is passed on when it is outgrown.

Hope you can help!

Well farmgirls, the hats are all here and I am hoping for sunshine within the next few days so I can get a photo of them all hanging on the clothes line, then send them off. Don't know how the weather is where you all live but we have sure had a wet spring. Thanks again for all the help!

Megan,
Thanks! I will watch for the package. Can't wait to see all the hats together before they go out. I hope to get a photo of them before they go off to Mongolia and I will try to get one off to everyone who helped. The response has been amazing and I am so grateful. I'm sure the recipients will be grateful too.

Thanks,
barnagainkristin

Hi Farmgirls,
Anyone still working on hats? The deadline has changed to the end of April since the team taking them will be leaving sooner than the one planned earlier. They will only be able to take 60 hats. If we go over that number which it looks like we will thanks to some awesome donations the rest may be sent to One HEART Nepal if that is O.K. with everyone. Let me know if that is a problem for anyone and if it is I will make sure that your hats go to Mongolia. Thanks to everyone working on this project.

Carol,
I got a huge envelope full of tiny hats that are adorable today and so many too. Some are tiny but they will be going to the rural hospitals so I think it will be nice for them to have something for preemies. Thanks so much. I can't believe all the work that is going into this from wonderful farmgirls.

Just a note for everyone helping. I looked up the circumference size for 0-6 month hats and some of the information I gathered says 16 1/2" instead of 15". I'm sure either size can be used but since I knit sort of loose mine will most likely be turning out around 16 1/2" instead of 15". Happy knitting or crocheting!

Megan,
Thanks! We will just give them whatever we can gather and that will be good. I will post the new exact date of the deadline ASAP when I get it. Can't you just imagine the cute little babies your hats will be given to? Take Care and thanks again for helping.
