I was just wondering if there were any other farmgirls out there that do Mixed Media art journaling or makes hand bound journals. It has become a passion of mine. Since my husbands passing in July 2010 I had crawled into a very dark hole, leaving doing anything artsy alone. He was my biggest cheerleader. About a month ago I finally wanted to dig back in. It has lead me to Art Journaling and book binding. Creating my own journals to do the art in is so wonderful. I am also creating smaller little books for gifts. I will share a couple pictures of a few of the journals I have made. If anyone is interested I would love to share the process or get any tips.

Hope there are a few of you out there!!

Hugs...Kristy

Kristy, I don't bind books, but I wanted to tell you that yours in the photo is beautiful! One of my DD's is working on an altered art journal. They look like a lot of fun for creative expression!

Yes Maggie.. I scraped paint on it and let it dry. Added a bit of texture. Then used the mod podge to apply the cut outs. Wrote the words and doodled here and there . Have fun with this !!

Hey girls !! it's really ok to not put into words your deepest feelings in your journal. It is very healing for me,but we are all different and are walking our own path. I have taken a class on art healing to really get in touch with those feelings and finding creative ways to work them into me artwork. You don't have to at all !! I might also suggest finding a picture that inspires you or touches you. For instance...I love pink so I made this silly page...

Sorry this is not a good scan as I used sparkling Mod Podge as a final coating !lol !! Anyway...this page was inspired by pink...it reads in part...If I were a bird I would be pink...Just have fun !! You can do it !!

I know just what you mean girls. Claudia and Marian, I have never been good at sharing my feelings verbally or in writing. I used to see showing emotion as a sign of weakness (not for others just for me). I've realized how wrong I've been. And well I've been trying to change my way of thinking over the last few years. It's not an easy thing to do especially when you have years and years of experience of keeping it all bottled up. My kids and my guy, they are the reasons I am choosing to let loose. Sometimes it's just a word other times it might be a memory I tell them about. It's usually short and sweet, but it's a place to start.

Hugs~ Melanie

Claudia, you ARE not alone in this. I have the same feeling, it is so difficult to put into words what you feel, let alone write them down. But I am trying to think of some memories and maybe write down the key words that means a lot to me

To both Kristy and Brenda...a thousand thankyou's. I will use suggestions by you both. I think I sometimes can say what is deep-down-to-my-toes what is in my heart, but putting them on paper definitely makes it real. I honestly don't think I am alone in this, but...I will let you know how it goes and what I am doing as time goes on. Please..all you contrubute, as it helps give me ideas and encourages those of us who only can dance the minuet and not the cha cha.

Claudia I'm so happy for you that you are going to try to put your thoughts into art. It is a great way to do it. Prayers with you sweetie that if you see its too much you'll slow down and be ready to pick back up after you have reflected on what your feelings are telling you. Hugs,Brenda

Dear Claudia... I am so happy I made a spark go off !!I was also going to suggest that you go to your computer word program and create words with different fonts and sizes. You can make up sentences,phrases,poetry...anything that you love !! print them off and clip them out. Use these to add to your pages. I will try to remember to shot a photo of how i am using them in a project I am working on.

I hope there are others out there that are having fun playing !

Kristy..you were of great help. I think starting with words, some of my sketches will mean things to me, as I learn to let go. Sometimes I feel as though if I do, there would be such a break in the dam that I would never get it back. I have always liked it safe, but I see that you are so much freer....and happier letting your talents and mind go wild. good for you, and thank you for your suggestions. You really sparked some ways I can adapt. Blessings!

Dear Claudia ...great question !!By all means if you are not comfortable expressing your deep feelings that is fine !I am comfortable with sharing my healing after losing my love. My kids know what I am doing and Get it ! So it's ok for me. But it doesnt have to be for you !! Your art journal can be anything that makes you happy. I like to write in a notebook words.. just words that make me happy. Or cut pictures of flowers,birds,butterflys,dragonflies..anything that appeals to you. Use those as a source of inspiration. You can doodle on your pages. You can add rub ons.(Found in the scrapbooking section) You can write in your own hand writing. Or cut words from magazines, letters, anything and add wording...if you like. I also collect ephemera that you can find free of charge on line. I have several sources and will find those links and post later. I love them they come in a sheet that you download to your pc and print them out. There are tons of themes and many pictures on one page. I cut them out and add them to my journal pages. That is where I got many of the images I use. If you like to draw.. draw away on the pages you have created. Paint if you like. The possibilities are endless.

Marianne...you can just glue papers to your surfaces as well !! That is totally fine !!! Actually if it is thinned with a bit of water it makes a wonderful sort of glaze that mutes the colors a bit !

Hope this helps a bit !!! I am off to study color theory !! LOL !! I'm too old for this !! Naw.. having so much fun !!

Kristy, I have read this whole section on Creative Art..and the Journaling. I started from the beginning and I admire you so much to be able to put into words feelings of your husband after your loss. Some of us may have bottled up feelings for years, and the thought of putting them out there might be a bit scarey. Of course I'm speaking about myself, but do you have a hint...just one.. on how to get started on that. I can write, & do pretty well, but putting down deep feelings that are written..maybe for someone else to read in time...how do you do that? OK...I can hear, many of you ladies say..she really needs to see a counselor. That's too expensive..so... do you have a suggestion? By the way, for over 40 years, I have been in a professions (nursing) where we were to keep our feelings to ourselves and support our patients in the turmoil they were experiencing. I think that is where it started.

Sorry I've been MIA... I am following a dream and taking online art classes! Yea... soon be 54 and I am back in school ! So to say the least having a blast !!But it does take time to get my homework done !! lol ! But... I promised to share and that I will. Here are a couple other Prompts :

1. Using torn pieces of paper (can be anything, magazines, scrapbooking papers, old receipts, movie tickets...anything !!) tare pieces into odd sized pieces.Ok..nows the fun.. open up your journal page.pick up 2-3 pieces of you paper, hold above page and let them all drop. Now...get out your Mod Podge . Pick up one at a time and put layer of Mod Podge and lay paper exactly where you dropped it. Cover that piece with a coat of MP,do the rest of papers in same way.

2. paint your journal page in a solid color. Attach bits of cloth with modge Podge (Will shorten by saying MP) after they are dry, take a water proof black pen and draw fun things around the material. between those pieces add, text, add doodles...you can do it. I circle,square,heart,star... or just doodle !! You can add found pictures from magazines or your own photo copies of pictures. The skys the limit. There is no right or wrong... it is your journal... make it you !!

Ok.. time for class... will return !!

I tried a few pages like this, ended up using a coffee sleeve instead of a credit card.
I used it to scrape the paint across the page and also used the bumpy part to make patterns
with the other color. It worked well. More ideas please!!

Ok Sisters... Sorry I have been MIA lately. Huge weather changes here for the last few weeks has put me into a Fibromyalgia/Arthritis flare! Ugg.. So under the influence of pain meds I am not my most creative self ! lol !! Anyway... it's Friday so I thought you all might have some time to play with your art journals or just seperate pages you can then place in a box that you also decorated !! Hum....new idea for you !! lol!! So on with the first lesson on how I do my journal pages. A blank journal page is scary.. affraid to make that first mark. Affraid to mess it up !! Let go of that thinking and just play!!! Here is an example of a new page in a new journal.

So what I like to do is pick out a few colors I love or in the mood for. Now here is the scary part. Take some of your paint(I used acrylics on this example..but you could do water color if you like) I put a few blotches of my base color scattered around the page...don't try to do a grid and keep it really neat...Now take an old credit card, rewards card, whatever you have and scrap the paint into the paper. Not to hard.. just drag the paint all around the page. While this is wet ,take another color and if you have any bubble wrap Cut a small 2"x2" piece from it..take a dab of the second color onto your finger and apply it to the bubble side of the bubble wrap. Now...turn it over and lightly press in several different areas of your page. You can do this again with a 3rd color as I did or just do your thing !!!(Note: If you don't have bubble wrap hanging around...you can use crinkled up waxed paper, plastic bag...again..play with texture. )
Ok.. then I took an old plastic butter lid and cut it in half. Then I took an old pair of craft sheers or pinking sheers and cut a wavy edge along the flat side of butter lid. Now you have created your first Recycled tool !! lol !! While all the paint is still a bit well I drug this across my page in two directions. Here is a closer pic of how my end page turned out.

This is how I start many of my journal pages. There are a million and one ways you can do them. This is just what I enjoy in creating mixed media art journals. PLAY...PLAY... PLAY !
What I do when starting a new journal I go through it and here and there do several double page spreads before I start adding the goodies. Just be sure to let them dry well before you open to do another page !!! (Yes I learned from Experience !! LOL !)

Ok...Ladies... go and play !! I will post on Monday my next steps... how does that sound !! I want your feedback, post pics, tell us about the tools you come up with !!!

Hugs...Kristy

I would like to try my hand on one for me....but time...oh the darned time lol
