It's true. I keep breaking my embroidery needles when I am working on a project. I do not buy the cheapest needles, they do seem to be of good quality, but I am also embroidering some thinker things, so I thought I would ask if anyone had any suggestions to help me. My husband is nervous that there are "loose needle pieces" in the carpet. LOL I guess that is the downside of living with a creative farmgirl. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am embroidering anything that is boring around here, so pillows (suede), purses (canvas) and other materials. I am going to get gold needles the next time I am at the craft store, hoping they aren't too expensive. Thanks everyone!

The emery will remove any burrs and sharpern the needle, your hair will only make it slide through fabric easily due to the oil in your hair. I have had needles that I thought were useless and a few times through the strawberry and they were good as new. I've been sewing for 50 years and wouldn't do without my emery strawberry.

I love my gold needles, Just started using them and I could'nt believe how they glided so nicely right through the fabric. I have always used the regular needles some I have from past relatives.
Some of my needles are over 30 years old. I will never go back to using them now. I bought my gold needles at Jo-Anns.

Could I ask what are you stitching? Most of the embroidery needles are not "sharp" as "sharps" are. They seem to be rounded at the ends to slip between weaves, instead of through fiber, if that makes any sense. If your stiching heavier deniem, that could be why your needle is breaking. I had embroidered a whole leg of my jeans while I was in school, and went through all of my mothers needle packets. She found out when she heard some creative cussing coming from my room. Once she gave me the right needles (and I went to replace her good ones) no more broken needles.

Oh, I'm learning a lot about needles here. The emery strawberry reminded me of my mom. She didn't use her strawberry. She taught me to just run the needle through my hair a few times, and it sharpens the needle. Works for me.

I haven't yet broken one but have sure bent the heck out of several - I am always dropping pins though and use the magnet also to find them.

On heavy fabrics like those you mentioned the needle can become dull pretty quickly, even the more expensive one so you might want to find and emery strawberry that you can run your needle through to help keep a good point on it.

Rachael--I've seen gold needles at Michael's and I think Joanne's sells them as well. What kind of fabric are you using?

As far as needles or pins in the carpet, my sewing room has carpet and I use a magnet that is attached to a long handle ( my BF picked it up at Home Depot for me) Use it across the carpet and it will pick up any that have strayed

As far as breaking needles, the material is obviously thick and your using a needle intended for a lighter weight material. Try using a needle for a heavier weight fabric instead of an embroidery needle.
Also, good idea for the gold needle, it too could make a world of difference.

I thimk I am using the right size, but for the wrong type of material. Thanks for the suggestions. Husband said to buy the ones not marked "Made in China". LOL He is probably right.

If the thread passes easily through the eye of the needle it is the right size. I can honestly say in 50 years of embroidering I have only broken one needle.
