I have never made one before but a friend of mine told me I should wash rag quilts the first time at a laundromat instead of in my own washing machine. Is this necessary or may I wash and dry it in my own machine? Thanks!

Kim

Don't use a pinking shear as that would make it so that it wouldn't unravel. The ones with the spring in them are nice since they open on their own.

I always wash mine at the laundry mat the first time. They just make such a mess. And that was when I had a top load machine. With my front load I definetly would take it to the laundry mat. I would hate to have something happen to my machine!!

Rag quilts are so cozy!! Have fun making it and maybe some pictures later??

I used a scissor with a spring that made it open on it's own and didn't cramp my hand like a regular scissor does.

I have a over full size hand stitch and hand quilted quilt with the thick batting in it I made
I thought for sure it would come loose with some of the stitching.
I have the new machines you know front loaders and dyer
It came out beautiful
I had to dry it in the dryer about 3 times since it was huge.
It was so fluffy.
really was happy the way it came out. hugs sheila

I personally would take it the first time to the laundry mat. In a front loader all the extra little pieces of fabric that comes off if it could clog it up. I always take mine their first and then after that wash it at home....

Kristy, you can use cotton, but it doesnt make it as soft nor will it unravel quite as fluffy. :)

I just want to pop in and ask about the rag quilts. Do you use flannel or can they be done with cottons? I have a stash of fabric and want to do a quilt using 10" squares using this method. Any feed back ? Thank you !!!

I've made a few of these and have always washed and dried at home and haven't had any problems with the washer or dryer or the drains. Just make sure you clean the lint trap of the dryer a few times during the drying cycle.

Yes, that is the type I mean. I have a front loading machine and I know it would make a mess but does it cause any problems with the washer or dryer?

Are you talking about the ones where you clip the seams so they ravel? I wash mine in my home but it does make a mess.
