Posted - Nov 01 2010 : 10:12:27 AM I am sitting here reading the latest Cluck and was surprised at the jewelry ideas MaryJane gave for the merit badges. She hinted online before about this, and I was sure I knew what she was up to, but I was wrong! So I thought I would share my idea in case anyone wanted to try this as well. I have been thinking about making a charm bracelet using my earned badges. Instead of printing them out on paper like MaryJane did, though, I am going to print them larger on shrink plastic, color them in, and heat them up so they shrink to size. Shrink plastic is readily available in many craft stores, and it's fun to watch it at work LOL. Catherine

Posted - May 12 2011 : 07:30:01 AM Thought I'd share the results of a couple of "shrinky dink" experiments I've done with photographs. These are wallet size photos that I copied onto the dink material that is designed for inkjet printers. I use an HP Photosmart printer. These appear to be out of focus but that's because of trying to take the picture of them (they're small!). In reality they are good focus.
This "dink" shrunk to 7/8* x 1 3/8".
This "dink" shrunk to 7/8" x 1 1/"
Because of the intensifying effect of colors with shrinking I'm not as pleased with the first one as the second one. Part of what I'm learning about this is watching for the balance and intensity of colors because when it's shrunk it changes considerably.
Just thought I'd share this experiment . . . Hmmmmmmmm, let's see . . what shall I try next?!?! Thanks! CJ

Posted - May 06 2011 : 7:21:48 PM CJ, I love what you are doing with all your shrinky dink art!
I also wanted to add that sometimes you can use a very fine sandpaper, like they sell in art depts or in auto supply stores, to rough up the smooth shrink plastics.

Posted - May 06 2011 : 10:25:11 AM That's great info cj. I used the white inkjet paper for the farm girl roundup I did last year and it did smudge every where....very frustrating.

Posted - May 06 2011 : 10:13:18 AM To anyone wanting to PRINT on shrinky dink with an inkjet printer . . . you really need to use either the Frosted Ruff 'n' Ready material or the white stuff designed specifically for inkjet printers. They both have one side that is slightly rough and that is the side you need to print to so the ink will set and dry. The R & R stuff is better for coloring pencils on that side as well . . they don't work as well to color on the inkjet material (feltip pens do but they can make your "shrunken" dink look kinda dark). And the R & R material is WWWWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY cheaper than the inkjet special material. I tried to print onto "Bright White" but it is slick and shiny on both sides and the ink will not set and dry and it just became a smudgy mess and not useable at all. Just thought I'd share those thoughts . . . CJ

The FGSW Henhouse "shrinky dink" is a smidge under an inch across. Used charm clips/jump rings to assemble. That's it and thanks for looking! CJ

Posted - May 05 2011 : 09:04:15 AM This is the WWW/FOTL charm . . . Wende got the pair of boots charm, it is only about 1/2 inch tall. The dink charm is a little less than 1 inch wide and about 3/4 inch tall. I used the material for inkjet printers for these. Did the design in Print Shop using a label template so I could use colors, etc. Thought I'd share this as well CJ

Posted - May 05 2011 : 07:32:59 AM It's been a while since we've talked about Merit Badge jewelry. But I was making shrinky dink charms for our "Women of the Wild West/Farmgirls on the Loose" Road trip. So, I decided to try some Merit Badge "dinks". Here are some that I put together in Microsoft Office 2007 with the jpegs Kevin sent. Printed on Frosted Ruff 'n Ready material, colored with coloring pencils (markers make them too dark). Pic on the left is some of them BEFORE cutting and shrinking. On the right are the finished charms and they measure from 7/8 inch to 1 inch across. I haven't put them on charm hangers yet. (oops! I noticed that the honey bee and hands carrying the water bucket together ones are turned over from what they should be . . oh well! Guess that shows what they look from the other side)
Just wanted to share . . . CJ

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 8:39:42 PM I was able to successfully get the entire Sisterhood badge to print . . and shrunk. Came out pretty good. On the "Ruff 'n Ready" Shrinky Dink plastic I did charms to go with rooster charms for all the "chicks" in our Henhouse. Those came out pretty well too. The "Ruff 'n' Ready" is much less expensive than the white plastic that is for inkjest printers. Anyway . . . things are coming along. Looking forward to more fun!! CJ

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 03:51:33 AM I made a charm bracelet out of shrinky dinks a few years ago. I loved it but found it uncomfortable to wear because the edges are a bit sharp. Also had to be very careful about making the holes into the charm quite a ways because of breakage. Has anyone else had these problems? Any solutions? Marianne |
