After reading Mary Jane's Stitching Room book I had this desire to needle tat. Only problem was finding a supplier. Having to cross boarder shop I now own one and began last week. I am thrilled to be able to finally tat after having given up with shuttles. Not perfected it yet ( sometimes twisting) but I can read a pattern and really enjoy this purse size hobby. Thank you MJ!

Goggle free tatting patterns, there are tons out there! I was surprised at how many folk are blogging about tatting. I particularly like Tatman's site. Also, check out all the links on http://www.georgiaseitz.com/ The site doesn't have any organized index per se but there are a great number of patterns linked if you go through both the current and past lessons.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. My hands almost remember by themselves how to tat with the shuttle. I'll look for the needles and use your suggestions for threads. Where are you finding your patterns? Suzanne |

I have been needle tatting for a year and half and love it. Everyone received doilies, coasters, etc. for Christmas. Michaels carries the needles and I have also found that a doll needle works well with regular crochet thread. Most shuttle patterns can be used with needle tatting. |

A lot of places online sell the needles, but really they are all the same needles as far as I can see, from Handy Hands. Hobby Lobby stores carry these needle sets as well. For threads, you have many more sources. Handy Hands has a website themselves with threads, and many tight spun crochet cottons seems to work well. Think Cebelia or perle cottons. If you are comfortable with the finer threads, I have found that the hand quilting thread from Gutermann is great because the glace finish keeps the thread from tangling. I have also played with the Signature threads in the variegated size 20 and loved that. Those are usually sold as embroidery threads in sewing stores. If you want to stick with thicker threads, use the doily cottons in crafts stores, ranging anywhere from size 8 to 20. Or you can go COMPLETELY nuts and buy one of each brand from The Tatting Corner, my new favorite online store LOL. The have an amazing selection of high quality threads perfect for tatting and I just got a boxful of goodies to try and see what I like best.

I had never heard of needle tatting until I read Mary Jane's book. As a child I learned to shuttle tat from my grandmother. I am hoping that some of it will come back to me. I have a few of her shuttles. I believe my grandfather tatted as well. Where are you finding the needles and threads? Suzanne |

Marlyn your project looks great! I taught myself to needle tat in February and have been having fun with the art form ever since. I've already completed the 3-foot length required for the beginner level tatting badge and am now trying to decide what project to tackle for the next level.

I had trouble with the needles... I found shuttle tatting a lot easier for some reason, but I am going to try the needles again. If I can just figure out where I put them...........

Great work for a first try!! I too recently started needle tatting and I find it addicting. I am actually waiting for the postman to deliver me some lovely threads....
