WHAT KINDS OF PROJECTS ARE YOU CRAFTING USING RECYCLED MATERIALS! I am currntly using plastic from the overwrap machine at work to make what I call garage rugs- They get dirty & you just take them outside & hose them off!I have made them in several sizes. My grandmother taught me to make bread bag rugs when I was a kid & it stuck with me all this time.

This is a great thread! almost all of my sewing projects are made from recycled fabrics and such! by-the-yard fabric is SO expensive! It's cheaper to buy items at yard sales and thrift stores and tear them apart and make them something new! I've been doing this since HS. I especially love finding pretty vintage sheets to sew with. A couple weekends ago I bought an entire closet full of men's suits at an auction for $2.50! LOl It filled up the entire back of our Jetta wagon. lol... Aftr sending Two garbage bags full to male relatives, 2 to the St. vincent's, 1 to garbage and a bag of funky retro jackets to one of hubby's friends I still have a huge stack of beautiful wools and tweeds to use for whatever!

Grocery bags.... not really a pattern... here are two links to get you started. Crochet in a circle to make a bowl and then keep adding and adding until the size you want.

Thanks! I like sunflowers-I make a tabletooper that is quilted that looks like a sunflower also. I will have to put a picture on.

Like it. =) I have made reusable groery bags out of plastic grocery bags.... but not a rug. And... Karla... what holds the tomato plants in.... if you think of the bottom of the tube of jean material... I put a casing with string in it to gather around the plant as it hangs. I also put a piece of sponge inside the tube so the gathering edge doesn't actually touch the plant. One of these days I will take a picture!

Don't know how old your DH's are but they would be great rugs for laying
on if you had to work under a car, truck or piece of farm equipment. Would
really help their backs. Just a thought!

I guess it would-it makes a mighty big ball when rolled up though? It makes a great garage rug! I have a friend whose son uses it to lay on in front of the TV to play games! It is really pretty soft & squishy!

I love this idea of using stretch wrap to make rugs!
I'll have to see if this would work on a frame for rug weaving.

I must admit that I am a great Re-Purpose Person...but not terribly
great at the recycling thing. Don't seem to do more than I have to
but I do try to be sensitive or conscientious to what I purchase that
is not great for the landfills. I guess in a lot of ways Re-purposing
is recycling. 
By the way Karla...you can still buy those same crochet hooks at Joanne Fabric and most places that sell sewing and craft items. I
just recently bought one, myself.

My recyling project this week..... making hanging tomato planters out of old jeans and milk jugs. My oldest gave me a pile of worm out jeans with holes in the knees. I cut them off at the knee and use the bottom of the leg. Sew a handle out of a couple of strips of the denim and attach to the top of the "column". Then take an empty plastic gallon container (milk or juice) take the top and bottom off. Stick it in the leg of the jean to give it some sturdiness. put the tomato plant in upside down. Use a piece of sponge with a slit in it to protect the stem of the plant, gather the bottom of the jean around it. Hang it up! I am hoping they will hold up better than the plastic grain sacks I did last year.

I have had the crochet hook for 20 years so I am not sure where I got it? The plastic that comes off of our shrink wrap machine is probably 4inches thick & I don't have to cut it but when my grandma taught me to make bread bag rugs we had to cut the strips at 2 inces wide & tie them together. Then you just crochet in any shape you want-I have made round, oval, sqaure, oblong, etc. The round I start out making 6 chains and join for round-then using sc I increase 1 stitch in each sc for the first couple of rounds & keep going. As it gets bigger I go to only increasing every 5-10 stitches just so it lays flat! Hope this helps. It is great to know that this plastic is not going into the landfill to live for thousands of years!

Karla, would you please let me know how you make these. My husband throws away thousands of pounds of the stretch wrap a month and no one will recycle it. We looked. I am not real good with these type projects, but I can try. How long and wide is the strip of plastic. how do you join them. Where do yo get that monster hook? That is a brilliant way to use all that plastic that would go to a land fill. Thanks for sharing.
