Posted - Apr 12 2010 : 2:21:08 PM I have been sewing for a while but I just have the hardest time getting the knack of hand-sewing. I used to embroider quite a bit and was pretty consistent with it but for some reason my hand-stitching always seems so uneven and ugly. Does anybody have any suggestions? Are there practice drills, like multiplication tables or something? Please help!! Amy Grace

Posted - Apr 14 2010 : 7:14:22 PM I never thought that a small needle would make such a big deal....oh it does!! I like to use a John James Sharps #11. The other needles feel so big now. If you would like I can send you some. Barbara

Posted - Apr 14 2010 : 4:40:30 PM Hand sewing for me is very gratifying and soothing. It's great for piecing quilt blocks and easy to pack-&-go! My grandmother taught me how as a child, then I also took a class at my local quilt shop for further instruction and techique now that I'm all grown up and can appreciate the skill more. If I could suggest clicking into www.maryjanesfarm.tv and scroll down until you find the sewing part. She has a video demonstration you could get some assistance there, as well as apply for a Merit Badge. I wish we lived next door or down the road and I would love to sit and sew with you. :)

Posted - Apr 12 2010 : 9:56:16 PM I agree with the needle size - most people use too large a needle and it actually makes it harder. Small, even stitches work the best. Most use too long a stitch on hems. My Nana taught me and I always like to wear long dresses so make my hem stitches very small and close to keep them from catching on the heels of my shoes and tearing out.

Posted - Apr 12 2010 : 3:47:27 PM Amy Grace I do alot of hand sewing because I enjoy doing it and I embroider avidly, my best advice is small stitches, a good quality thread and needle and a needle that is not to large. Easier to demonstrate than write about. LOL Kathy |
