Girls,
I have a BIG mess. I washed wool felt because I read somewhere that you could. Well, I now have a HUGE mess and I guess I just wasted about 24.00? Is there anything I can do to "fix" it? I washed in hot water, gentle cycle, mild soap, cold rinse. Well, now I have a 3 yards of a fuzzy mess. HELP!

Don't Panic - here are some ways to correct a mess. First, place the felt back into some hot water with soap - don't play with it let it get really wet. Then while the fiber are really hot take it out and start to stretch the felt. If the fiber will let go it is at this point. If you can not make it give just a tiny bit we will go to plan B. If they stretch a bit then go ahead and stretch it as much as you can to flatten out the bumpbs. Rinse under cold and then tack it down like you would to shape a garment. Let dry. They you steam press to get the rest of it flat. If you are at plan B you then take felting needles and start to work on the areas around the bumps to firm them up which will flatten the piece out. If not then you go to the sewing machine and start doing freestyle sewing on it and call it a design element.

Joy.. if all else fails... maybe use the felt mess for putting into homemade papers that is in MaryJanesFarm magazine that is out?

Well, I think it will toss the darn stuff and start over....I am sure it is not the first time I have wasted 24.00. :(....Darn it...lesson learned. Thanks so much for your help.

Ok - I see what happened. The directions on your pattern are to purchase wool felt OR make your own felt by washing wool fabric in hot water etc. The wool felt you purchased was ok to use as is without trying to felt it further. Do you have any wool fabric you could try to felt? If not, I'm afraid you will have to buy the wool felt again. You might try to wet the wool you felted and with a towel underneath and a pressing cloth on top try to steam it into shape again. I don't know if that will work but it won't hurt to try. Let me know how it goes. I wish I had better advice for you.

I dont know? I just bought the wool by the yard. It is kind of like the squares that you buy for crafts only it was on a bolt and I got it by the yard...Can you tell that I dont know much about what I am doing???

I was trying to felt it. Gosh, this just makes me sick. I read several places on line...and it said to wash in hot, rinse in cold..to felt...but what the heck caused the lumpy, fuzzy mess? I know 24.00 is not a lot of money but I sure hate to just toss it.

I'm pretty sure it's toast. When you wash wool, you always want the wash temp and the rinse temp to be the same. Unless you want it to shrink and felt even more, never agitate, just soak. Were you just pre-washing it? If you are just pre-shrinking it, soak, rinse, soak, rinse, roll in a towel to remove excess moisture, lay out flat to dry. I hope someone else has some better advice for you than me.
