A good friend of mine just gave me all of her Mom's treasured knitting needles. Her note to me said " My Mom use to sew all of my clothes until she had her stroke. She was able to continue with at least one passion, knitting. May you enjoy it as much as she did, my wish for you."

So, I am more determined then ever to master the art of knitting!! I sat down last night to do a little practicing of casting on, knitting and purling. . . with great success!! Felt like I had always done this, must be my friend's Mom's spirit living on in those knitting needles!

Today I will practice increase and decrease and finally casting off.
Once I feel I am doing okay with that, I will attempt my first dish cloth. I'll let you all know how I am coming along!

Oh Judy, to have your grandmothers treadle machine, how precious!!
You will suddenly get the urge one day to sit down and do it, I know from experience, and you will savor every moment too!

What a great idea to "keep a baby blanket on hand" that you made.
Now I have a great excuse to knit up a baby blanket. . Do you have any pictures you could share?? Would love to see a finished one or even one you are working on.

Hooray for you. I learned to knit by myself and still have a lot to learn. I have a really easy basketweave baby blanket pattern. It looks great and is just knit and purl. I keep one made for baby showers.
A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me his mothers quilting supplies when she passed away, then, I got my grandmother's supplies along with her old treadle sewing machine. My dream is to make a quilt top using her machine. She made quilt blocks on that old machine until she passed away 7 years ago. It's nice to have such a connection to the people we love.

What an awesome gift. That is such a sweet story. I have all of my Mom's knitting and crochet needles and patterns ect. She gave me her loom before she died, and my sister her spinning wheel. But I've never used it without Mom, so I have a big job ahead of me.

Joanna, there is nothing wrong with mistakes. I read in a knitting book that you should always knit a mistake into a piece of work because nothing can be perfect, otherwise it would be better than something that God created. I'm glad that you're enjoying knitting!

Thank you! I did start on my very first dishcloth. It is coming along nicely, mistakes and all! Figure by the time I have made a dozen or so I should have the basics down! Hahahaha!! It is so much fun and no one ever mentions that it is addicting

OMG!!!! You are all SO WONDERFUL!! I am slowly getting into the rhythm, it's hard since I have always crocheted. So holding two needles, holding the yarn differently etc is the most challenging part.

I too, want to make hats for preemies, something near and dear to my heart. I also want to get good enough to make socks and mittens. I have all my mothers knitting patterns and would love to bring them back to life.

Thank you for all your encouragement and your stories too!! I am off to my rocking chair to knit for awhile

That's awesome Joanna! I have been rekindling my love for knitting and crocheting over the winter, and I'm inspired to try new things with it. I hope that your knitting adventures turn out well!

What a wonderful story Joanna! It's great that your friend gave them to you rather than just letting them sit somewhere for years unused. Your friend knew you could do it(knitting)!!!
Now listen, I am 50 1/2. I learned to knit when I was maybe 7 or 8. I could always knit and purl, but my stitches were always uneven, and I never knew how to cast off.....I can't tell you how many pairs of knitting needles and how much yarn I have bought over the years, wanting to do it, but just not able to.
It was when I joined MJF that I realized that I needed to stretch myself and do things out of the ordinary. Over this past winter, I sat down with a really easy pattern for a dishcloth, and actually made it, start to finish!!!! It was scary, yes, but I did it!!! I learned as I went along. There are some great tutorials online these days to help you. I have made about 6 dishcloths so far, a set of 4 little washcloths for my new grandson, and am just about finished with a little hat for him. My goal is to make the little hats to donate for babies, and maybe someday a sweater for myself!
You can do it! Ask on here anytime you need help! :)

Joanna, I'm sure you are going to get it all down and be knitting your little fingers off! It's relaxing to do and so rewarding to see the finished piece. And just knowing that the needles were used by a lady who's passion was knitting is just to cool. Enjoy

Blessings, Brenda

I would love to learn to knit again. I did have a lady show me several years ago and I made a scarf. But there is no way I could do it now. I can't remember how! So a friend has started knitting and said I could come hang out with her. I just might have to do that when it warms up a bit.

It just seems like such a satisfying and peaceful thing to do. I hope you have many happy years of knitting with your friend's mother's needles. I bet they have knitted some beautiful things in their time. Have fun with them. I hope you are able to post pictures of your work.
