Hi Y'all, Are there any quilters out there? If so what are your favorite quilts to make? How many have you made? When did you learn to quilt? I learned to quilt a few years ago and love it! I am finishing my first quilt which is a Yello Brick Road quilt. It is all diffrent shades of green. Very pretty! I went through a green phase where everything had to be green. lol

I love to quilt ! I really enjoyed reading posts in this thread. I prefer hand piecing and hand quilting, because that is what I grew up learning & it came naturally to me to enjoy it.

happy stitches,
Nancy

Ann:

The retreat that I am attending in September is 2 days long. She has rooms set up for travelers to stay. But hey if you come my way for the retreat I have an extra room for you to stay.

The comment about - you have to know how to quilt to go to a retreat. I went to my first retreat in 1992. I did not know how to quilt. I took my sewing machine, the tools they recommended, and off I went. I learned so much that weekend, about resources, books, tools, tips that it gave me the confidence I needed to take the first step to not be afraid to learn. Quilters are very helpful people. They want to share their knowledge with other quilters. Just a thought - let other quilters know you need their help and they will step up and help you learn. Happy Quilting.

I just started quilting this January, and am close to completely my second quilt. I started with a pattern from Amy Butler--the Belle Quilt--and have made two of them. One was for me and one will be given away as a baby gift. It is a lovely pattern and was easy for a beginner. I pieced it all by machine, but have quilted by hand. I definitely have found a new favorite hobby!
If you want to check out the patterns (they're free!), you can find them at http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/products/free_patterns.php

I guess to be able to go to this Quilt retreat, one would have to know how to quilt? I'd love to go to see the quilts are at least learn.

I think red & white are great. Red is my favorite color!
craftystranger Posted - Mar 14 2010 : 07:05:49 AM
I also love "The Farmers Wife" those letters are great. Have not started any of the blocks -- looks like they are all done by hand. Ann Bernadette what do you think about red and white for the swap? I have been told all reds go together the more you have! Then folks could mix in green for Christmas or blue for a July quilt. If we did a sampler idea then we would get a nice mix of blocks. What do you think? Barbara

Viola! I have "The Farmer's Wife" Sampler Quilt book! Ya know what? I think I was born in the wrong era. I love everything old and hisotry. I will check out the book you recommended - going to Borders Book Store today in the city! So he retreat you go to, is it a week long and you stay there - like "camp"? If the opportunity presented itself, I would be willing to travel. I love the Black Hills. My daughter went to Camp Judson last year up there. She was so disappointed they did not take them to see Mt Rushmore. I enjoy the history of your area as well. Thanks for all the info, I have been looking forward to all thet new posts! Have a great weekend everyone and do domw sewin'!

Hey - thought I would share if everyone is not familar with the American patchwork & Quilting magazine. Their website is awesome. Go to AllpeopleQuilt.com. You can download free patterns for quilts, bags, etc. I also collect and read books regarding quilt stories. Emilie Richards is one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed reading "Endless Chain. Lauraine Snelling "The Healing Quilt" is also a very enjoyable book. During the holiday I read "The Memory Quilt" by T.D. Jakes. I received my copy of "The Farmer's Wife" Sampler Quilt. The intersting part of this book is the letters from 1920 farm wives It came from a contest held in Jan 1922. I have enjoyed reading all the letters. The book comes with CD to download patterns included in the book. Sorry I have run off with info. Thought I would share. Finding out about retreats in your area a good source would be your State Guild. I will be attending a retreat in September thru my local quilt shop ( Dakota Quilt Shop). Retreats are fun.

You are more than welcome to use that idea for your projects. The more prayers the better I always say!!! I like your idea regarding a swap. I have never done one before and am excited to be involved. So where do we begin, with a head count? A signature quilt would be fun, or a sampler of your favorite block or a theme of some sort to bond us together maybe. Lots to think about, maybe Im getting carried away. And, I have quite a fabric stash which Im sure you all do as well. Another passion and obsession Im afraid. :) Barbara, if you would like to organize it - I think that would be super. What can I do to help? And how do we decide what we are going to do? ~ Ann Bernadette ps I like most any colors, am drawn to the deep rich colors i.e., Kansas Troubles, reds, greens, purples, golds.

The idea of a prayer for the label is a great touch. I may have to use it for some of my projects, if you don't mind. I think that the easiest way to have a swap would be to pick two or three colors for the quilt. Each quilter would make a block for each person. This way we could include everyone regardless of experience. If we have alot of people interested we would need to perhaps make sub groups 12 in each? Then we could swap the groups. The size of the block 9 or 12? With a signature? Just throwing ideas out there. I would be glad to organize this but love input. Happy sewing, Barbara

Wow, this is going to be fun! That sounds like a great pattern for the lap quilt. I've recently made 2 lap quilts for the hospital I work in ~ for patients to use while riding in the wheelchair traveling thru the halls for tests etc. I provides a bit of comfort and privacy for them, plus a little color and love. A special prayer for the sick is on the label instead of my name. I printed it on transfer fabric thru my printer and simply appliqued it onto the backing. Im not so sure that the print will stand up to the frequent washing and detergent of hospital standards, however I feel as though the prayers were sewn into the quilt and will always remain for whomever uses it. This idea popped into my head a few Sundays ago at church. So, I decided for this to be my project for Lent.

I used a simple 4 patch (6 inch) on the first, and 6 inch rag quilt on the second.

Im up for a Round Robin as well. I am enjoying this so much!

Thanks you girls

Ann Bernadette

Dawn I'm a beginner and this sounds like something good to start with. I'll email you my address if you wouldn't mind sending instructions to me. Do you hand stitch or machine stitch?

Blessings, Brenda

Hi,

I would be up for a Round Robin. Not sure what it is, but I will be happy to join. I have made a lap quilt recently. It is made using a pattern called a split nine patch. I used 3 1/2" blocks for the nine patch. I had some fabrics I bought to make a color blended quilt and never made it. I had around 8-10 different fabrics in soft colors. A variety of large and small prints, checks, tone on tone.

I think it would be great for a beginner and make a very interesting quilt. A split nine patch is made by making a nine patch and then cutting it down the middle of the center blocks. Then you arrange them as you wish.

I would be glad to send out instructions if this sounds like one that might be enjoyed by all.

Is anyone else interested in a Round Robin? I know that Ann Bernadette said that she was interested. Would love some feed back. We could exchange a certain size block with two colors? Black and white or yellow and blue or red and green? What do you think? Barbara

Ok, I wanna know about the Quilt Retreat, or at least A Quilt Retreat to go to. And talk about being hooked? I dream about quilting. I also love traditional patterns. I would so enjoy being a part of a quilting circle or club but cannot seem to get any takers. If there is a Quilt Retreat up in the Black Hills, please tell me about it! Wouldn't it be great if some of us could meet up at a reteat? And I was hoping to find some friends on here w/ the same passion for quilting as I have. Maybe we could do a Round Robin or something like that or Cross Country Quilters. What do ya think?

If you were to ask my hubby "Does your wife quilt" he would answer "I s Mt Rushmore a National Monument?" Yes, and Yes I am a quilter. I started quilting in 1992 when I attended by first Quilt Retreat. I was hooked after that. I belong to the Thimble berries Club thur the local quilt shop. As to how many quilts I have made, well lets say I have made a bunch of them. I give them to charity, friends, family members ect. My grandaughter said the magic words last week. She said "Grandma I want to make a quilt" I will have to wait a few years, she is only 2 1/2 yrs old. I love traditional patterns. I quilt my own quilts. Love this hobby. I am glad that I am retired, so that I have more time to quilt.

Quilting has become a passion for me. I have many hobbies, but quilting is the staple of them all. Reading comes in at a close 2nd, however my favorite reading subject is about guess what? . . . Quilts! i.e., Elm Creek Series and "The Persian Pickle Club". My Grandmother handpieced and hand quilted all of her quilt and that is an art I aim to keep, however have to admit I love to sew on my machine too.
