Hi! Does anyone know of a good book about how to fit clothes patterns so that they actually fit well after your done? I need some help- I'm short and not over weight but, well padded. Most of the clothes patterns seem much bigger than the size they are supposed to make -and very boxy- unfitted. I'm tired of making something which does not fit well when I'm done! If you've got the time I'd love to hear from you! Any input would be great!! Thanks -Cindy

I think if you try your county extension office (4H) they can probably give you some booklets or offer them at low rates. These booklets tell you exactly how to alter patterns to fit. It would be a cost effective measure to try. I hope this helps a little.

You might try Craig's list in your area - sometimes you can find a dressform there. JoAnns has good sales from time to time as well. I would suggest having a custom sloaper made. Having a sloaper that fits your measurements gives you something to go by when altering other patterns. Another suggestion is to get ahold of Threads magazine perhaps from your library. They have ran several series on how to take proper measurements and how to alter patterns for personal fit. They also offer a DVD series on fitting. Check out Threads magazine on line or Taunton press(issuer of threads mag.)

Diana- I was thinking that would help- but where do you find them? Aren't they really expenive? I don't have the nerve to try the duct tape dress form in MJF magazine. It would be a blast though!! -Cindy

I would suggest a dress form to your size. I find it is to hard to attempt alterations on my self.
