I am slowly getting the hang of knitting, after 40 some odd years!!
I have made 2 baby washcloths, so cute, for my soon to be born grandson. They turned out very good.
I am doing another one, but in a different pattern. It's very simple really, but I am trying to figure out how to keep track of where I am!
I can tell if I am knitting or purling when I end a row, but for a pattern where I have to count the rows, how do I keep track of what row I am on? I am thinking I will have to write down each row on a piece of paper then check it off as I finish it, is this what you all do, or is there a better way?
Can't wait to see how I will do it, when I am doing different stitches within a row, and have to jump up and leave my knitting in a hurry for whatever reason!

I find that I am in my element when I have knitting needles in my hands. I always find that knitting settles my mind and puts it in a place that is very peaceful and fulfilling. My hope is that everyone that picks the two sticks can find that creating something magical is self stimulating and accomplishments! As an avivd weaver I had to put it on hold with other obligations with my daughters competing in high school. Now I enjoy that knitting is so portable and I can carry it with me and enjoy that europhia at any time. Happy knitting!

Well right now I am using a piece of paper with all my rows written down and crossing them off as I finish them! :) As soon as I can I will head to hobby lobby for a row counter, and try that.
Gerri I am going to aspire to knit as well as you do someday!
Girls, she made me a beautiful, soft, comfy, warm hat because I asked for one, and did a wonderful job! I have to fight my middle daughter to wear it all the time, lol!
I appreciate that you girls are all here to ask for advice.... that's why I love MJF so much, I can always find help with whatever I need it for.
I have just started a dishcloth in the Feather and Fan pattern, I'll let you know how it goes...

I use a row counter on my knitting needle. It is the only way I find that I can keep track of what row I am on. Make sure you change the number of the counter when you complete a row. Some knitting patterns may have up to 20 steps before the actual pattern is visible. Once you establish the pattern you may be able to do it without the assistance of a counter. Keep practicing your knitting techniques, as you know practicing brings you to the level of mastery. Knitting is very forgiving and before you know it, you will be knitting while conversing with someone or even watching t.v. Hope this is helpful!

If it is a pattern that is difficult sometimes I copy the pattern and mark off the rows as I complete them.

I copy and cross off on the pattern...I've tried a row counter but it doesn't help as much as crossing off...

I use a row counter if the rows are just straight knit & purl. If every pattern row is different, I make a photocopy of the pattern and just cross them off on the copy as I go along.

Good luck!

Thanks girls! I will try to get out to get a row counter later today, and see if that works...

I count the rows, and sometimes I write down every row I finished if it is a "difficulter" (lol bad english hehe) pattern. Never got the hang for a counter but that is me ;)

I always use a row counter on a pattern with more details than just knit and purl. It's especially important if you are knitting something with shaping like a sweater or sock. They are really inexpensive around a dollar. Well worth the money and they slip right on to your knitting needle so you won't lose it. I have a flat style one with pegs that I use for sock shaping or sweater decreases.

When I was first beginning I had a row counter to help me keep track of what row I was on. Now I just count the V's, if I'm knitting in stockinette. Count them up from the bottom of your knitting including the one on your needle. And you will always know if you're on an odd numbered row or an even numbered row based on whether you're on the purl side or knit side. Sometimes that's helpful enough for me if I set it down and came back and couldn't remember if I was on row 21 or row 22.

Use a row counter they work well. Can find them at most stores that supply yarn. I use a safety pin when I can't find my row counter to mark the rows. Put a spot of nail polish on a knit one and a different colour on a purl row. Have fun.

Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do!
