Hey fellow tatters! I thought it would be fun to start a thread about tatting where we can show off our finished work, get help with work in progress and share patterns-

Currently I am working my way through the Celtic Tatting book- It takes me a couple times with each pattern-

What type and size of thread do you prefer? Do you needle or shuttle tat?

I got a new book called "A Tatter's Workbook" I was getting bored with having to search for more patterns for edgings online. So, this book is perfect for my cup of Tea!
here are two that I have done so far out of the book...

...well dang.. I tried loading the pictures here but for some reason, not working.
Anyhow, if you like to see.. they are on my blog (below)

Karrieann, I taught myself needle tatting from Georgia's site. Her lessons made it real easy to learn! I now want to teach myself shuttle tatting as well, but right now I am just too busy.....

I have never done any tatting but it always looks so beautiful to me. I have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis in my hands...so I can't do small intricate work. I can do mostly knitting and larger crochet but I loved seeing some of your tatting and hearing you enthusiasm for the craft.

Betty Jo - thanks for the suggestion on the elmer's glue. I would have never thought of that! I did try watering the sugar solution down quite a lot which seemed to work somewhat better. But I'm going to try the glue next time.

I went all over the city today looking for a tatting needle, I wanted to give it a try. I have shuttles but the needle looks so much easier. But couldn't find one anywhere. Where can I get one?

Hi:

Does anyone have any suggestions for starching or sugaring a tatted piece to stiffen it up? I just finished a small project and want to hang it like an ornament. It' a bit floppy on its own so I thought maybe I could stiffen it up like my grandma did with her crocheted doilies.

I have tried using the common sugar recipe (3/4 cup sugar plus 1/4 cup water - boil and let it cool, then dip the item in it, blot off the excess and place it on a towel to dry in the desired shape) on another piece I finished but it left that one looking "frosted". Maybe a solution with more water and less sugar will work better with the fine thread?

Any other ideas?

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

... in case some that are interested in attending a "Tat Days 2010" that is put on by the tatting guild from South Carolina, "Palmetto Tatters Guild".
You do not have to belong to the guild to attend. I plan to attend.

Not all the information is out yet but here is the link to it.
http://www.palmettotatters.org/

Where? Toccoa, GA
(Just across the South Carolina line into Georgia off I-85.)
When? August 27-28, 2010

...there were few e-mail addresses, I e-mailed to one... she added my e-mail address to her list for when the information comes out, she'll e-mail me.

...ooops! I see that I already mentioned this! LOL!

My sister in law told me there are some good tatting videos on YouTube. She found one that demonstrated how to use a shuttle. I found some old instruction booklets and patterns that belonged to my great grandmother, so I've been looking forward to giving the shuttle tatting a try. For now I'm just practicing my needle tatting techniques and having lots of fun with it!

I'm going to have to see if I can find that Baker book and DVD. On the weekend I found a tatting shuttle in a bag of knitting related goodies I got at a local thrift shop. It must be a sign that I should give tatting a try!

I did find a book entitled "Learn to Tat" by Janette Baker that comes with an instructional DVD. I'll post how it goes with the shuttle.

Thanks, Betty Jo! I have the basics down with needle tatting but I thought the shuttle might be a bit quicker and easier. So far, I haven't made heads or tails of the shuttle so I guess I will be back to the needle unless I can find a good tutorial.

Kimberly this is what I would do I tried the shuttle and could not get it very well at all the needle is very easy--I would go and get a larger needle to work with like an upholstery needle and blunt the end because they are pointed and do you have a book on how to learn to tatt?? Email me and I will send you copies so you can learn it is so fun--I will do my best to teach you and there are vidoes out on you tube as well that will show you if you need to .

I just picked up a shuttle but I have no idea how to use it. I hope it is quicker than the needle - I am so slow with the needle that it drives me crazy. I'll have to search for a primer online.

Ok I must say tatting seems very natural to me but I get confused on the pattern where it has me flipping the work over and tying a knot. I was trying to make the wreath in the back of the Happy Hnads book. maybe I should start on something easy like a strand of lace.

Candy,

That is a beautiful heart. I am so excited I just picked up my tatting book and needles from Walmart yesterday. Thanks so much for letting me know about their site to store. My Walmart would have never carried tatting stuff but since i can order it on line and have it delivered it was great! I can't wait to get started.
