Hey there, I have made a few quilts, but I am always frustrated that my corners dont meet exactly. Are there any patterns out there that are maybe more random but simple for someone who cant sew a straight line?

Sarah: the very easiest quilts are one patch. One shape pattern piece, square, rectangle, etc. You make many and sew them together until you have the size quilt you want. Another very easy one is the four patch. In this block you sew 4 squares together so the two colors are diagonal from one another to form a square. Make many of these blocks and sew the blocks together until the quilt is the size you want. Hope you understand this. Good luck. Bonnie

Check outBuggy Barn Quilts! They're "crazy" patterns are virtually mistake-proof, they don't look excessively scrappy, and they're fun. You put them together sort of like a paper-pieced quilt, but without the paper. You actually cut fat quarters all together and then kind of re-piece them, but you can't really screw anything up--"just make the squares a bit smaller if you do". Their "Barn Chicks" pattern was my first quilt top and I was soooo amazed with how well I did! You can order the patterns on line from their shop at http://buggybarnquilts.com/, in quilt shops, and occasionally on Ebay. |

Since I needed a quick quilt I am doing this strippy one it definately would be a great beginer project. I to use my 1/4 inch foot. I made 3 blocks so far I did 12 1/2 inch squares of muslin and I had brown and green scraps mainly so that will be the color scheme.
I do use my scrap for applique and crazy quilting too.
When the top is done I will post it on my blog.
All you girls that want to quilt here is a great place to start and if you have any questions any of us quilters can answer you. So get sewing!!

You know they do make a 1/4 inch sewing foot for machines. I use it when I quilt and it has helped me sew a straight line. I like patterns that use squares or strips. They come together very easily.

I like squares. any version of squares that is easily divisible by
cut 2 1/2 = 2 finished
cut 4 1/2 = 4 finished
cut 8 1/2 = 8 finished
I don't mess with patterns, although I have, I simply create using this formula and see what comes up.....I"ve got a work in progress of simply scraps from other projects and all the squares finish divided by 2.....that way, even if you're like me and mathematically challenged, I can divide anything by 2......units...think units.....and BTW, I don't pin while piecing the units either.....I rely on opposing seams that nessle together like puzzle pieces....besides that, no one's quilt is perfect, only God's work is perfect, so my quilts don't need to be....good luck!

String quilts are also very easy and pretty when you put them together.

There are many other examples out there, I don't draw lines, I just sew the scraps to a fabric square I like a scrappy look and not such an organized look.

I like a modified log cabin. Strips and strips and strips. Easy peasy. I like to change out the (typically) red spot in the middle (that depicts the hearth of the cabin) with a fussy cut novelty print. |

Kay Wood has numerous patterns for "pointless" people that don't want to deal with matching points exactly. Myself, it's just a matter of practice and if the points don't patch--who cares. No one is perfect!

Split rail Nine patch any thing you do in strips and cut again.
I found on my machine that the all purpose foot was not 1/4 inch and so I haveto adjust the needle position every time. Also when you need you can draw with a pencil on the back a line at a 1/4 inch between the line and your sewing foot you'll get better. Look into and thing by Elenor Burns she has made a world of difference to my quilt making.
