I've just learned the hemstitch and houndstooth check for a bag I am weaving. The pattern the houndstooth check makes is such a neat design.
What types of projects are you fellow weavers working on? Cant wait to hear!

Hi Sarita, Kerry and Melody so happy to see that their are fellow weavers out there. I am a self taught weaver myself. Years ago I purchased a used small 22" Harrisville 4 shaft loom. Purchased Deborah Chandler's book and learned to dress the loom by myself one afternoon. The possiblities on the 4 shaft loom are really endless. I purchased a book by Helene Bress, "The Weaving Book". It has over 3,000 variations of Plain Weave, Overshot, Twill, Monk's Belt and Huck Weaves. It has all the essentials for weaving with pictures and draft forms. I found that it was easy to read and gave me so many different weave structures. Check Amazon to see if you can get a used copy at a discount price.
It has been a while since I have been on my loom do to circumstances with a daughter actively involved in High School, a husband who had a mid-life crisis and divorced and finally my mom who has been very ill this past year with renal failure. Sadly, she passed just a few weeks ago.
I have a number of different looms and since sold the Harrisville. I now weave on a 40" Macomber loom. It's a true work horse. I purchased used and couldn't be happier. I like to weaver rag rugs and this loom has the stability to handle a heavy beat. I'll talk about my other equipment some other time.
So, Sarita, I have to tell you that you have been a huge inspiration to me. I saw your picture on your blog of your "Woman's loft" it is perfect. It appears very peaceful and quiant for your personal solitude. Today, I spent the day organizing my studio area and feel so confident that I will dress my loom tomorrow. This is something that has long been waiting for me. Thank you for sharing your pictures and allowing me the opportunity to make the move to revisit a passion that I so desire.

Kerry, actually I purchased books and read and self-taught. I also did belong to this email list and they were always flying here or there, going to their beach home and taking a loom, talking with very techical language which just was not me. I took myself off the list. I learn something with each project. I am the type of person that if I watch someone do something, I then never discover my own style. I make lots of mistakes but each is another class in weaving the right way. Will a person ever quit learning weaving? the patterns and possibilities are endless.
My daughter made messenger bags on the looms when she stayed with us. They were really cute. I like to use my wool since I have a large supply of it. I do love the wool rugs, they are nice and soft and warm.
When we moved into this old farmhouse, the upstairs had not been used for years. They had stored fruit jars, and other old items that they didn't want to part with but didn't really use. We have been here 9 years now and I made one of the rooms off my studio into a bedroom. I continue to work on the upstairs to get it where I can be creative and feel peace and joy while I am working on my projects. My husband has helped me in so many ways. I have not put much money into it, someday, I plan to have a studio on the ground floor but for now, I am very happy with "my woman's loft".

Hi Sarita and Melody,
I guess I am 1/2 and 1/2 self taught and with the help of another. I have never taken a class, however, I would really like to. My MIL got me started this past September, and I have enjoyed it ever since. I have made several scarves so far and now I am onto a tote bag. My MIL has taught me all via Skype and its worked great. I love your weaving room, and all the looms. How did you first learn to weave, Sarita?
Melody, sometimes you can find some good weaving videos on Youtube. Just the other day I was looking at ways to do the hemstitch, and found a couple of fabulous videos. That may help??
Melody you'll have to post a picture of your loom once you get started.

Just checked out your blog Kerry. How lovely your place looks and very cozy looking too!
Your little table loom looks just like mine! It is now presently in my front room gathering dust. I want to learn how to weave and your blog site has encouraged me to get out of the house on this very frigid north woods afternoon and head for the library to check out some learning to weave books!

I am weaving a large wool rug on my 4 harness Toika floor loom. The wool is all from my own sheep and wool that I have spun except for some of the warp thread. I also am weaving cotton dish cloths on the table loom. I have a smaller wool matt/rug on the upright tapestry loom. I have pictures on my blog. I am still working at getting my space for spinning, carding wool, sewing, rug hooking and weaving set up.
It is very fun isn't it? Are you self taught or have you taken classes?
