I have been wanting to learn to tat and have only seen tatting shuttles. Does anyone use tatting needles like in Mary Janes Lifebook? I recieved the books for Christmas and am anxious to try tatting. |

I taught myself to needle tat this year and made several Christmas gifts (from doilies to trim on clothing). The needles can also be found at a Michaels craft store. It really isn't difficult to do and once you get the hang of it, you can use most shuttle tatting patterns. There are a lot of free ones on the internet. Finding tatting pattern books is the real problem. I have looked and looked for a grape pattern (particularly a grape doily pattern). Does anyone have one?
I hope you find the needles and give it a try. You will love it. |

Sherri- The doll needles I have used in the past are the same diameter of some of the tatting needles I have bought before and smaller than the three largest actual tatting needles I have. I find the Doll needles that you can buy at Jo-anns (about 6-8 inches long) create a nice sized tat with fairly small picots.

All the needle tatting supplies you could need including kits are found at http://lacis.com/catalog/catalog.html. Unless you are working with a pretty heavy thread, doll needles are pretty thick for use with traditional tatting thread. All of the vintage patterns that I have from my grandmother call for size 80 to 100 thread.

I use doll needles and just sand the point to dull. Also, please check out the video library for Katy's tutorial. She is brilliant and teaching this very well. For is visual learners it is amazing.

No, a crochet hook won't work because you need to be able to pull it through the loops. Also when you look for the needles- make sure the eye is low profile.

Ok, had to write as I tried this with a darning needle and baby wool to get the feel of the stitches.
It occured to me during this trial process that "doll" needles must be something used to make dolls. Duh!@ Anyway sorry for
being such a goof. I can now see, however, the necessity of the long needle and that probably a crochet
hook is not going to work. The stitches are very easy to get on the needle. Consistency with tension is probably important. Will pick up some crochet
cotton, try to find long needles, and see how it goes.
Not so handily yours but going to try anyway.

Hey Thanks Alee.
Saw my Mom today and she helped a bit as well. She has never done it but has some beautiful pieces from her grandmother. "Doll" needles, I have to ask what are those? Is that a brand name? I went on line and saw some books from US suppliers. Do you know of you can try it with a crochet hook?

Oh Yes, Jan! There are lots of patterns out there! You can also use "Doll" needles to tat with but take some sandpaper to te tip first to dull it! I kept scratching myself when I used the doll needle. Also google free tatting patterns to get some more and you can also buy books at some hobby stores. I bought one at Hobby Lobby with Celtic tatting patterns in it.

I think tatting with a long tatting needle is a lot easier than tatting with a shuttle, but then again I'm left handed and suffer (sometimes) from reversed logic....somehow I learned to crochet left handed and knit right handed....go figure...but anyway, tatting is loads of fun, and a good use for what I call beadspread thread found at places like Ben Franklins and Hobby Lobby....Hobby Lobby has the same book I learned from, and it really isn't that hard....good luck!

Yup! I taught myself from the book! It seems more complicated than it is and I can tat and read or watch TV now! I even taught myself while waiting for layovers on a plane trip! You can get tatting needles at Hobby Lobby if you have one near you!

There are 2 shuttles at a local antique store. I was going to try MJ's instructions too so i am looking for the needles. Do you need a shuttle I can see how much they are. |

Alee taught herself following the instructions in MJ's book. She used needles but I want to learn using the shuttle. I can make a chain but cannot put it together. MB
