I am learning to crochet. I can make dish rags and granny squares. I consider myself to be 'Wilma Flintstone' when it comes to this craft. I started trying to make an "easy" crochet mesh roll hat. HA! The more I crochet, the smaller the hole gets. This thing won't fit my cat's head! What am I doing wrong?

only wrap around finger once any more than that and you will cut off your circulation

Thanks for all your responses! I have one more question....
How do I get the yarn to move smoothly through my fingers (pinky and otherwise)? I must be really keyed up when I sit down to do this.

I use my pinky finger as my yarn tensioner -- wrap it around your little finger before you hold it with your index fingers, etc., and it will help with gauging your project. Smaller gauge is usually caused from holding the yarn too tight and if it is wrapped around your little finger you can feel it and tell if its too tight or not before it gets to your crochet hook. Check your gauge - perhaps you are crocheting the sts too tight - if this is the case try using a larger hook.

Check your stitch. I realized when I was trying to make socks that I was actually only doing half the stitch. I was doing more of a half stitch than a single stitch. And then make sure your hook is the size called for.
