Hi all , I have just finished piecing my first quilt. I am soooo frustrated with the machine quilting process!! Could ya'll help? I purchased a "Big Foot" for my machine after having tried a friend's . What worked(s) so well on a practice area is messing up on the quilt. The stitches are too big, the bobbin thread is showing on the top and I generally feel I have no control over the fabric . Would just a regular "walking foot" work better? What about thread...what would give a new quilter sucess? Any tips are greatly appreciated, Thank you!!!

Hi!
May I ask if you were trying to free motion quilt? That is what the big foot is for. A walking foot is really only good for stitching in the "ditch." If you are new to quilting, I would say stick to quilting in the ditch until you have a little more experience under your belt. This is just to keep you from getting frustrated and deciding quilting isn't for you.(heaven forbid!) Go to a quilt shop that offers lessons, or better yet, find an experienced quilter and have them teach you. I teach classes in my home, so I understand where you are coming from. It is also a good idea to make yourself a "practice" quilt about 12" X 12" out of muslin, and practice on it. Use colored thread so you can see what you are doing and play with your machine until you feel better about it. Good luck. And don't hesitate to let me know if you need more help! Melody

I use a walking foot because it allows all the layers to move through smoothly. Did you baste your quilt layers together well before you began? Stitch length should be easily adjusted. The bobbin thread coming through to the top means the tension on your top thread is too tight. If possible, make some quilt sandwiches, small ones, with the same type of fabric and batting you used in your quilt and practice on them until you get the right combination of tension and stitch length. Hope this helps.
