Hi girls! I have been making my own horse stuff for ages thanks to the old Suitability patterns out there. The Dark Horse Designs has really inspired me to make use of all those cool old wool blankets Ive collected over the years from thrifting, often they have holes or someones been silly enough to wash them causing them to get all rumpled up...or prefelted.. So Ive made several now.

But now I am looking at my box of scrap cotton yarn and thinking hey! How easy to crochet a nice pad! Im going to give this a try. Has anyone else done the same? Im wondering how shaped it will need to be and whether the stretch is sufficient to form to the withers without any bunching.

Okay, Im about halfway through my crochet saddlepad. Its black, scarlett red and charcoal grey. The backing is going to be a black fleece that I bought to go with it. As soon as I remember how to post photos I will do so. *grumble..

I think these are valid points ladies. I dont know if any of you have seen them but wither pads have been made of crochet forever and they benefit because they allow airflow around the area of the pressure point so I think the looser weave for lack of a better word, might actually be cooler and more comfy. Im doing two layers like a giant pot holder. The goal will be that it remains completely smooth. I will keep you posted on my progress. :) We will see what the horses think when I am done. :) I may decide also to do something with a felted wool yarn. That may eliminate the loose weave issue. We shall see!

I could also stitch a layer flannel on the back come to think of it..

hey Sarah,
I too have been peeking at Dark Horse Farms and Nancy's wonderful pads & blankets...aren't they lovely?
Hmmm, your idea of the crocheted pad sounds interesting but am wondering about the stitches and whether they will be problematic for the horse. Oh & Lisa, thank you for your comment about dyes....a good thing to keep in mind.

IMO,I would think it would have to be a very tight small pattern, or the ridges and bumps from the yarn would be iritating and cause sores, even then, I don't know how good of an idea it would be, cause they would have to be thick enough to actually serve as a saddle pad, and then be washable on top of that while holding its shape, I prefer and have always used lambs wool pads and never had a problem.

I know you have to watch dye in stuff. Years ago i braided some yarn tie downs and one of the horses was allergic to dye in the yarn..

I have seen them off and on on websites. Never tried to crochet any. Ones i saw had a lighter saddle pad in under and then the crochet one in Sc and on top the other pad
