I have recently started to embroidery and absolutely love it. However, I'm not to keen on my hoop. It's an inexpensive wood one. My mother gave me an old one she had that's wood but definitely is a higher quality then the one i have. But when i go into stores all i find are cheap wood, or plastics.
Which do you all prefer? What are some pros and cons for them?

I like the wooden ones but if you wrap the hoops in white bias tape, they hold more snugly and leave less of a mark in the hooped fabric. I learned this trick when embroidering on silk batiste for a Christening gown.

Hosanna, I went up to acmoore tonight and had a look around. I found the one you were talking about. I was cheaper then the plastics so i decided to try it. my only worries are that a) they only had one size and b) im afraid i might end up loosing the fabric accidently with the two ends of the metal. but we will see.
And Jessie you can even try amazon. I find anymore that i have to get a lot of stuff only. We dont even have a fabric shop around us..well we have apolostry shops but thats it really. so i kinda understand what you mean.

Karen, I like the heavy duty plastic ones, they won't snag your fabric as easy, and they don't swell or shrink with the weather. I got mine at JoAnn's on-line.

I like the plastic ones honestly. Even with the high dollar wooden ones, it seems like there is more slipping and loosening of my fabric.
I broke my wooden one, so now I am on an eye out for a plastic one. My closest JoAnn is over an hour away.

I Have one that has a flexible plastic outer hoop, which you place over the area you're working on. Then there is a metal ring that you squeeze and insert inside the plastic hoop, pulling the fabric tight. I don't know what this style is called or where to buy them, but I love mine. I've had it forever and someone gave it to me. It is especially great for things that have to stay taut, such as working with crewel wools and very delicate work such as hankies.
The wood ones allow fabric to slip. You could try fabric tape on yours and see if it helps.
