I went to a friends house the other day and had mentioned a while back that I have been wanting a sewing machine. Well to my surprise when I got their she called me out back to a small barn and said I have something for you if you want it? Did you hear me? That means give, free! Whoo hoo! So I go in and she hands me this beat up old box. I take the lid off and Oh my gosh!! Its a 1959 Kenmore sewing machine! It looks like it was never used. Now of course I have to learn to use it but first I need to know if you can tell me, can I get parts for it? It is missing what she called the bobbin holder, it also appears to need a new belt. Where do I begin to look for such a thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated! As you can tell I dont have a clue. Blessings,Karen

Have you tried to look on line for a manual? I have found other types of manuals on line just by looking up the model number and make.

Just a thought -- you might want to get your sewing machine tuned up. It might need to be serviced after sitting out back in the barn.

If you have the owners manual with it look up what needs to be lubed or checked. If you need help with the stitching you might be able to get one of you neighbors that sew to help set the tension and stitch lengths.

I have been sewing since my early teen years mind you I am almost 1/2 century old now. Maintenance is very import to your sewing machine. Keep it in top notch shape and it will work for you for ever. Or until you want a new one.

I am so thrilled, I was at my cousin Sat and he had an old torn up sewing machine on the back of his truck and so I went over to check it out. Guess what??? The bobbin case I needed was right there so I brought it home to see if it would fit and it does!!! So now that was free too! All I need now is a new belt which will be $3.00. Which the old one still works but I dont know for how long. The Lord has really blessed me by me even getting the machine free than the case that I needed free too. So now to learn to use it! I cant wait to show you girls my first sewn item. Blessings, Karen

Karen, Can you post a pic of the machine and where the bobbin goes? There are different types of bobbin cases so it depends on which one you need! Maybe you could ask the repair shop if they have a part # you could get from them and then check online and compare prices!

Yes, I thought it was totally ridiculous. Needless to say, I took the machine to someone else.

wow chadsgirl..150!!?? that's outragous
chaddsgirl Posted - Sep 29 2009 : 12:53:45 PM
For a machine as old as the one you have, those prices seem extremely reasonable to me. Especially if you have found someone who works on these types of machines regularly.

I tried to get a new bobbin casing for an old machine that I have and the repair shop wanted to charge me $150. Completely out of the question.

Ok I found a repair shop about 30 min from me. She said the belt would be $3 but the bobbin case is between $15 and $30 dollars do you think that is too high? Should I try and find one online , my problem is I dont know what Im looking for. Let me know what you ladies think. Blessings,Karen

Karen, I would check with a local repair shop as Tina said. Generally you can get belts for not much at all and if the bobbin case you need is the one I am thinking of they run about $5.00 online so you should not have much trouble getting one! I have 2 Sears Kenmore machines and they both have the same bobbin case, so I am guessing yours is probably the same as mine! If you can't find anything locally then try looking up Sears Kenmore sewing machine parts online! Good luck and have fun!

Karen, how lucky can you be? Like new and no cost--except for the parts.

You can find absolutely everything you want about your machine if you can find the serial number. Once you have that, you will find what you need.

This is one link I found, but there are lots. It's the model and serial number that you need to get you where you want to go.

Hi Karen,

Try to find a sewing machine repair shop (you know, the little ole guy who does this) in your town. There's usually one in every or every other town who's been repairing machines for years. If he doesn't have it, he may know who does. Kenmore's are pretty common still and that is a pretty common part. See if they have a book or you can order one online. There is an online sewing machine book store out of West Virginia but I can't remember their name. Good luck.

Karen,
Do you think that Sears can help with that? I know that they have Kenmore Machines, I would probably start there.

Blessings,
Tina
