Hello ladies,
Today as I was rumaging through the local goodwill store, I came across a lovly flower press for a buck! I figure I couldn't even make one for that. So anyhow, I know it is to press flowers flat but when do you put them in and does anyone have ideas they can share about what to do with them afterwards? Your input would br greatly appreciated! Thanks ya'll

I would put my pressed flowers in a pretty bowl or platter and put on the end and coffee tables for display. They looked pretty good. Also, at special party or dinner I would scatter some pressed flowers on the table around the plates and bowls and glasses.

Clear contact paper works pretty well for pressed flower/paper crafts. I've used it to make bookmarks.
I cut out a rectangle of cardstock, glue the flowers in place, wait for glue to dry, then cover the whole bookmark with contact paper. You can then punch a hole in the top of the bookmark and add a tassel.
You can also just use two pieces of contact paper and no glue. Have 2 pieces a bit bigger than you want the finished bookmark, put one piece sticky-side up, place flowers, top with 2nd piece and then trim the extra.

I have a friend who used to use them to make little flower fairies... on card stock paper, she'd glue them down. The flower would be the skirt or dress of the fairy, and then she'd draw arms, legs, face, etc. then she'd use deacopage (sp?) glue all over it. They were really cute. |

My DH made me a rather large wooden flower press last year and I used my press flowers for pictures. I pick up cheap wooden picture frames at Goodwill and have made several. Nice to look at during the winter time when everything around me is snow white!
Pictures...definately pictures!!

When I press flowers in a press, I have several layers of corregated cardboard. Between each layer I take and cut waxed paper to size, lay out my flowers or leaves, cover with another piece of waxed paper and then another layer of cardboard. The press I have will accomodate 5 layers done like that before I put on the top of the press and screw down the butterfly nuts. When you press on layers of waxed paper, the flowers can be stored between the layers in large envelopes or file folders. Flat type flowers work best - dianthus, pansies, violas, scottish bells etc. If the flowers are too thick, they distort or can mold before they actually dry. Be sure to leave them in the press about 5 days or so depending on the thickness of the flowers you've chosen. Also, any project you make with them should be kept out of direct sunlight or the pressed flowers will lose their color.

When my kids were little, I took some pics of them around the ranch doing various chores, usually watering plants. Then I took flowers from around the ranch, pressed and dried them , and did a 3-d pic, with the photos cut out and the flowers surrounding them, and then mounted them in frames with concave glass.

You can make stationery, and I've seen beautiful pictures made with pressed flowers.....one can be very creative with pressed flowers....have fun.

Hey Angela!! My grandmother used to press flowers in giant books like dictionaries and bibles. You can use them to make greeting cards, framed arrangements, book marks and all kinds of things. I don't know if it's different for an actuall press, but we just put them in the books a few minutes after picking them. One cool thing I remember was flipping through some of those books years later and finding the little pressed flowers. It brought back wonderful memories.
