I have been looking around and trying to educate myself on what a serger does and I'm wondering if I'll really use it much. I love to sew and I like the way a serger "seals" the seams but what else can it do? Anyone here use a serger? |

Posted - Jul 17 2009 : 5:16:40 PM Thanks so much for the tips. I definitely think I'll take a class. I have a cousin that has been working in a sewing center for quite a few years, maybe its time to pay her a visit. |

Posted - Jul 17 2009 : 08:14:14 AM Linda - Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer that will give you a lesson or two or take a class. It's well worth the lessons. Sewing on a serger is a bit different than on a regular machine but not difficult once you know all the tricks. I took a one day class when I got my first one and it was invaluable.

Posted - Jul 16 2009 : 2:54:07 PM I've had a serger now for nearly 25 years. I bought the one of the first ones available for home sewers and of course have graduated long ago from that first one. I don't think I'd ever want to do without one again. I have two - a viking 4 thread and an Elna 5 thread. I can make a regular straight forward t-shirt with ribbing around the neck in about ten minutes on one. When it comes to sewing on knits nothing beats it.

Here's a few links of video and other info for reading..it'll educate you on the many ways you can use a serger.
I do have one and wouldn't be without it now that I have it! It's just depends on what type of sewing you are doing as to weather the serger would be a benefit to you or not. It really strengthens the seams and gives a professional finish....plus there are all kinds of stuff you can make with just a serger and not even use your sewing machine.
This link is all about how to use a serger plus free projects http://www.sergerplace.com/index.shtml
Here's another link that shows how the serger works and what you can do with it. http://sewing.about.com/od/sergersoverlock/ss/serger.htm
Good Luck, Steph
