I would love to learn how to tat. Does anyone have any info on where to find supplies? What do you use for your needle? I have the MJ book and have read it, but I still have some questions. Namely what the needles are and where to find them, my local craft store clerks have never even heard of it:)
Any answers would be greatly appreciated!!

Wish all you farmgirls who know how lived by me so I could learn in person. It is hard for me to follow instructions in a book. Thanks for sharing the info about Katy and U tube. Maybe that will help me. Is there a reason why tatting with a shuttle would be better than with a needle?

I just watched the video the other day on the MJF website. I had never heard of it before but it looks like fun! :)

I haven't tried tatting yet, but want to learn shuttle tatting, because that's the kind my grandma did. I have found a neighbor lady who has agreed to teach me. Can't wait to get started! As for needle tatting, on MaryJanes home page, look at the "About Us" section. Click on Farmgirl U videos. Katy does a great job in teaching the art of needle tatting.

I have recently taken up needle tatting and am really enjoying it. I tried shuttle tatting in the past and gave up. I purchased my needles (a set of four different sizes) at a quilt show, but have seen them at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I am looking for free patterns (especially doilies). Does anyone know of a good internet site? I did find one site called "be-stitched.com". I have tried a couple of patterns and found that if it is a one-shuttle pattern, you can use a needle.

I was hoping you'd say YES! Done, I mail them out. I just got them out and saw there are two needles in the box. If the long skinny one is not talked about in the book, it may not be for tatting and was for sewing the eyes on a stuffed doll I made years ago. Anyway I'll never use it again so add it to your collection. LOL

Hi Angela,
I have a set of the needles and the how to book. I'd love to trade for more of you delicious pickled corn. Your canned goods were just to die for, I had some apple butter on my toast just this morning.

Kristen, I do tatting with a shuttle and it can be confusing! I have found that the pictures vary greatly between instruction books! Some pictures are very difficult to follow, while other pictures are much easier to understand.

There are also quite a few videos on youtube about tatting.

I tried tatting with a shuttle if that is what they are called and couldn't make sense of it at all. I decided I had found something I would never be able to do. Before I found MJF I found a used video at a thrift shop on needle tatting and boy was it easier to do. Now I just need some ideas on simple and fun things to start out making. Anyone out there have any suggestions on fun and easy projects to start with?
Good luck in finding a needle. There is a Hobby Lobby not far from my house that sells the needles so if you need me to pick one up for you let me know and I could send you one.
So happy to hear there are other people out there who want to learn these lost arts. I have beautiful items tatted by my great grandmother and my husbands grandmother but no one in either family learned how to do what they did. How I wish I could sit down with them and have them teach me how.

Angela the needles can be bought at any fabric store, if you get the straight ones. They are just called Doll Needles. I love tatting and had the honor of being taught by Katie King herself, the one in MJs book doing the tutorial.. It is a lost art

Angela, Here is a place that carries the needles. http://www.hhtatting.com/detail.cfm?ID=6 I had searched around online before and this place at the time had the best prices. I have also heard of some people taking a long needle and filing down the tip. As far as I know they are just called tatting needles. Good Luck and have fun!
