I am going to make my niece Sydney an Owl doll but am a bit stymied. I was thinking of cutting the body and head in one piece- should I do it face-forward or profile?

Any hints or tips would be great- This is my first animal doll and while I have an AWESOM animal doll book- no Owls!

Aaaaw! Love your description of the girls playing with your owl. What a sense of satisfaction it must be to see them enjoy something you made. :)

She already does love it! She had to keep rescuing it from Nora- I guess Nora needs one two. And I guess I did an okay job because as I was sewing on the head (sorry Michelle the Button washer thing didn't work how I tried it) Nora kept saying "Bird! Bird!!" Sydney and I tossed him back and forth a bit and his wings go out like an owls- It's pretty cool!

I wish I had had some scraps to use, but no- it is fabric we bought for the project- kindof furry but not really.

Wonderful, Alee! That's a great doll--looks like recycled wool or felting?

I found the picture, hope the this works:

These are so easy to make and would be simple to enlarge.
(Oh, the white string you see is part of the price tag not part of the design)

Create and Decorate had a great owl pattern in it a few months back, I believe it was featured on the cover. They are supper easy to make and you could enlarge the pattern so it would be a great pillow size.

Hmmm, let me dig around, I may have a picture on one I made using the pattern and I will post if I find it.

There was a very cute stuffed owl pattern in "Sew Simple" a few months back. I'm not sure how realistic of an owl you are looking for, but this one was adorable, but not "real" looking.

I went through all of my patterns. I have dolls, cats, dogs, bunnies, frogs, monkeys, bears and a few other animals, but no owls. If you wanted to change the owl to something else, let me know. I could probably send you a pattern for it.
Take care

Just tossing an idea out there...what if you make the head moveable? If you sew the head/body separately, and join the two pieces with buttons (like washers) on the inside and a bit of embroidery floss stringing them together, the head could rotate like an owl does. Sydney is old enough she wouldn't pull it apart like a younger person. :)

I can't wait to see your owl doll! What a great idea! It was so good to meet Sydney at the BBB, she is charming!
