Has anyone knitted socks that can give me instructions? How difficult is it, the only two things I have knitted in the past are scarves and a shawl.

I like to knit on 4 DP needles. AND heed Jenny's warning about beginning the second sock immediately! I have one great little tiny blue baby sock -- my little one is 2!!!!!

I finally, after 30 years of self-taught knitting, took a two week sock class. I had a ball, but I couldn't get the hang of the 3 DP needles until yesterday, after the instructor, a MAN, got me going and to the knit-purl rib was going fine until my cats decided my work was kitty Disneyland. Now, I'm back to square one again. Sigh

Ashley- I have a pattern for all sizes (which is nice because you can make endless variations and understand how a sock is made) on number 2 needles (four of them)..I can mail it to you if you want. Just email me with your address;) Or if you order wildfoot sock yarn from A Child's Dream Come True they will include the pattern free...you can get you needles there too! You can do this honey- it is really fun, I just learned last week and I have knit socks for my daughter and I am working on some for my sweet man.

I knit socks both at the same time, you have to have 2 sets of needles, but it is so worth it. Otherwise its so easy to keep putting it off. You can also keep track of rows of color or strips as you go easier.

Well, two needles are definitely easier than four, but your finished socks are alot nicer on four and you have no seams to stitch up. I much prefer four needles and it looks alot more complicated than it really is.
And I totally agree with Aunt Jenny...get that second one started right away! It's hard to do that second sock once the first one is finished and you know what it's going to look like. Doing both at the same time is a good idea too..but alas I'm not that disciplined.

Ashley..I knit socks all the time...on four needles..havn't learned any other way..they are fun to make and not hard once you get the heel part figured out..be sure to check out the knitting socks thread..there are lots of ideas and people's favorite patterns listed there!
My main hint about socks is start the second one the minute you finish the first one so you do get it done..it would be easy to stop there or forget how many stitches you start with. Some gals have two sets of needles and both socks going at the same time and go back and forth so they are done with both near the same time. I have thought that is a great idea, but never have done it myself..maybe some day.

Ashley, do you want to knit socks on two needles or four? I have knitted several pairs and love them. They are a little tricky, particularly doing the heel, but you can do it if you just take your time. Once you've done one, it all makes much more sense.
