Is anyone familiar with this type of handywork? I got this back in the 70's and never used it. I would be willing to barter for it but would love to know more about it. I also listed a barter for pretty ribbons in the barter postings.

That is so cool that you still have this tool, and the ladies were able to help you identify it! Have fun!

It is punchneedle, its the original form that we now call punchneedle. All those those punchneedles from dmc, crt, cameo etc. Are modern versions off of this designs. It works exactly like whatever punchneedle you use now. The Russian punchneedle I have is igolochkoy or some such. There were three sizes to the russion punchneedle, single strand, three and six strand.

If anyone would like some punchneedle patterns to try, email me, I would be happy to send you some.

My husband used one of those to punch a rug. He bought a stamped rug form, of burlap, and punched the design and colors as the pattern called for. You punch from the back side, and use your finger to hold the last stich as you punch the next. After you are done, he turned it over and cut each loop the punch had made and it turned out as a fine pile rug. It was beautiful. You can also use it to embroidy a panel, table cloth, pillow top, etc, and leave the loops uncut or cut, or cut some and leave others. It gives a beautiful raised design.

Yes, I think it is sort of a punch needle too. Looking at the pictures

Really. hummm. I notice from the back you use it just with your fingers. Seems odd. ????
